Why Is High Cholesterol Common in Children?
It used to be that we didn't have to worry about health problems until our older years, but now evidence is showing that high cholesterol is common in children. Specifically, scientific evidence has showed that the atherosclerotic process, which is the accumulation of fatty plaque in the arteries, has begun as early as childhood and continues into the stages of adulthood. So what is the source of the childhood cholesterol calamity?
The Root of the Problem
One of the main reasons that high levels of cholesterol are so common in children is that many children don’t exercise and engage in as much physical activity as they should, nor do they eat properly. Not only is high cholesterol common in children, obesity is as well, which is one of the main contributing factors to an individual having high cholesterol.
Studies have shown that bad cholesterol, also known as low-density lipoprotein, is more common in boys than it is girls while girls are more prone to having higher levels of good cholesterol, also known as high-density lipoprotein. Obese children are more likely to have higher levels of cholesterol overall. Not only that, but Hispanic children aged 9 to 11 were found to have more triglycerides and less good cholesterol than non-Hispanic children.
Stepping Away From the Edge
Thankfully, there are several things that children and their parents can do to change the statistics surrounding high cholesterol and children. Preventative efforts include:
- Not smoking around children
- Making sure that kids get enough aerobic exercise
- Identifying high blood pressure as soon as possible and taking steps to treat it
- Diagnosing diabetes early and treating it effectively
- Ensuring that children who are two or older get at least four cups of fruit and vegetables and that they eat a low-fat diet
In addition to the above preventative efforts, parents should also make sure that they test their child’s cholesterol levels, especially children who have a family history of high cholesterol or heat problems.
Putting the Medicine Cart Before the Horse
Another concern is that children are being put on medication when they don’t necessarily need it. It’s much better that a child first change their eating and exercise habits before they start taking any type of medication for their high levels of cholesterol. In most cases, only one to two percent of children with dyslipidemia will need to be put on any kind of medication.
To make things easier for children with high cholesterol, it’s a good idea for their parents to join them in their new eating and exercising habits. Not only is this a great way for everyone in the family to stay healthy, it’s a good way for families to bond.

Brownsville, TX --- Based off the title some of you may be asking yourselves “What is wrong with him? Isn’t it obvious to him that there is corruption in the Valley?” As a person that has lived in the valley for all of his life, it is more than obvious that the political system down here is ran in a way similar to how political systems are ran around the world ---hints to global political corruption. The title was chosen out of the idea that we have been running this political system in the same way for many many years, yet we are still scandalized when yet another government official is busted for some sort of corruption, at least “we the people” are.
In contrast, the media seems to not be phased by this anymore, especially since drug addled political/law enforcement figures are not weird occurrences any longer ---see Canadian Mayor Rob Ford. That is why when it came to public attention that, Jonathan Treviño, a member of the Panama Unit in the McAllen area was accused of not only “hushing down” drug raids but of keeping some of the money/drugs for himself and of distributing his gains with governmental departments and his family, it didn’t create as huge a national outrage as it should have. Furthermore, Hidalgo, Texas has been recently struck down by the knowledge that, now former, Sheriff Lupe Treviño, who also doubles as Jonathan Treviño’s father, was leading a covert drug rink using the resources at hand.
We are all well aware of the importance of “familia” down here in the valley, it is thanks to this ideal that these former cases were made possible. Even in the lowest of levels of the employment chain, i.e. fast food restaurants, convenience stores, secretarial positions, etc..., we have experienced the ability to “pull strings”. When this ability of sorts is magnified and paired with the, seemingly innate, loyalty Mexican families have to their members it is easy to create a blinding effect on the person in power. This extends to the fact that people in power end up hiring underqualified family members, thus creating a system that is both corrupt and inefficient.
Political candidate Gregg Abbot has gone as far as to compare politics in the Rio Grande Valley to politics in third world countries. As hurtful as this comment might seem to the collective ego of the Hispanic community down here in South Texas, it does raise a valid point. Corruption is alive and well everywhere around the world, but it seems to be reaching high levels in the valley; from the Vela’s, who have pleaded guilty to accusations of corruption crimes in the Progreso Independent School District, to the Trevino’s, who we have talked about in this article.
So when the question stands, “Corruption in the RGV, a reality or “Otra Leyenda Mas”?” the quick obvious answer is “yes, it is a reality”; however, the more concise answer involves meditating upon why, if it is such an obvious answer, and why, if it is such a huge problem, we are still having to deal with it.

Does journalism have a code of ethics? Do we need to be mindful of the people we serve as a journalist?
Journalism reliability is compromise by the actions of few. Today journalism is not about writing the truth, trough an objective eye. Journalism is more about giving the public by any means necessary a story. Regardless of the pressure which will be directed at a particular group of people, an individual, a business or a country.
What is the function of journalism in society? As technology moves forward we can catch a glimpse of the constant transformation in the media as a whole. The newspaper, magazine, news broadcasting is becoming a thing of the past. The internet has taken public media hostage, everything is printable, everything is news, and we seem to forget that our statements will follow us. We are allowing all forms of news to reach the viewers, listeners and readers yet with no confirmation on its veracity. Journalists are responsible to convey the truth, and yet we have to watch how technology alters the truth. Technology has made journalism an inconsistent and unreliable source in the 21st century. “The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society’s principles and standards of practice.” (Copyright@1996-2013Society of Professional Journalists) These words give us an idea of the code of ethics a journalist should follow. Can we honestly say we observe these qualities or individual characteristics in a journalist should observe?
