Note from the Author:

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is right around the corner and the spectacular time for gift giving, twinkling lights, cute coats, fun boots, and sweet hot coco will finally be here! It's the time for family and friends to gather together and make precious memories that will last a life time.

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. Ever since I was young, I've been fascinated by the beauty of Christmas and it's powerful ability to draw in family and friends from all different areas to celebrate the miraculous birth of Jesus.

During holiday preparations, I tend to be a detail oriented person. I enjoy the tedious work that makes holidays so festive. The gift wrapping, hanging the glittering Christmas tree bulbs, baking a variety of sweet cookies, and hanging the long knit stockings from above the warm fire place are all jobs I adore and believe make a difference in the beauty of Christmas.

I hope to spread some of my Christmas cheer this year by sharing some helpful recipes and decorating tips. I hope my advise brings you an easier and more enjoyable holiday. Take some time during this gorgeous season to admire and truly appreciate the small things in life that make it so much more fun to live! I wish you a very merry Christmas and a wonderful new year filled with love and happiness!

When to Use a Guardrail vs. a Handrail

When to Use a Guardrail vs. a Handrail
Do you know the difference between a guardrail and a handrail? Don’t worry—you’re not alone. There are major building code differences between the two, but the average person might use the words interchangeably. A handrail is, of course, for your hand and is often spotted in stairwells. A guardrail can be just about any size and is designed to keep to people safe near elevated places. At times, both of these rails can be made of one and the same components.

According to the latest International Residential Code (IRC), a “guard” is “a building component or a system of building components located near the open sides of elevated walking surfaces that minimizes the possibility of a fall from the walking surface to the lower level.” A handrail, on the other hand, is “a horizontal or sloping rail intended for grasping by the hand for guidance and support.” In most instances, building codes don’t require a guardrail but just a “guard”—that can be just about anything: A wall, a bench, a half-wall or of course a rail.

Getting Picky

Guardrails have a lot of subjectivity, but a handrail is much more specified. You can call a guardrail a “guard,” but a handrail is always a handrail. It’s purpose is to be held—however, a guard is simply to stop you from falling. While the actual purposes are pretty similar, the IRC has very different requirements for each.

According to the IRC, “Open sides of stairs with a total rise of more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below shall have guards not less than 34 inches in height measured vertically from the nosing of the treads.” This measurement is founded on the expected fall height, not necessarily how many stairs there are. In some instances, a guard might be required on both sides, in other instances no guard would be required.

Handrail Requirements

The IRC defines handrail requirements as, “handrails shall be provided on at least one side of each continuous run of treads or flight with four or more rises.” Since the needs and movement of the body is what calls for the requirement of handrails, the actual height of stairs doesn’t matter. Every time you take a step, you’re more likely to trip, fall or get fatigued. The biggest difference is that handrails are only required on one side while guards, if required at all, must be on both sides.

Sometimes both handrails and guards will be required. You’ll need to check with the IRC to figure out the exact continuity, grip size and height required depending on the structure. For more detailed instruction, the Stairway Manufacturer’s Association also provides examples for professionals. However, one of the most invaluable resources is the building department where construction is being done. There may be niche codes to follow, or the IRC guidelines may be interpreted differently.

Finally, remember that the condition of the ground can impact moisture levels—which is crucial when working with wood guards, steps, rails and the like. Discouraging decay is crucial. There are tactics to do so, and finding rotted treated wood is fairly common for builders.

Bariatric Surgery Benefits

Bariatric Surgery Benefits
(Other Than Weight Loss)
If you have had, or are considering, bariatric surgery, the main goal is weight loss. The good news is the benefits go well beyond that.

Improve your mood - Everyone wants to be happy and there are various (and sometimes complicated) reasons why we aren't. External factors aside, there are both biological and psychological reasons weight loss surgery can help you look at your days with a glass half-full mindset.

Increased energy - While some may think of obese people as being lazy, in fact it can often be a catch 22. That is, obesity can be a major factor in lacking energy. If you lack energy, you’re less likely to be active, hence the lazy tag.

So, is someone obese because they are lazy, or are they lazy because they are obese? Personal slander aside, the good news is that if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery can help boost your energy, not only improving your outlook on life, but also giving you a better chance of succeeding in taking on a new active lifestyle.

People who suffer from obesity often have blood sugar levels that look like a volatile stock chart. If your blood sugar spikes or drops, it can make you sluggish. Keeping it at a steady healthy level may not only help with the next benefit to weight loss surgery, but can help you avoid those snooze-inducing mid-afternoon lulls.

Diabetes - By any rational measure, diabetes is a national epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 29.1 million Americans suffer from the disease (that’s nearly 10 percent of the population.). The CDC estimates that the direct and indirect financial burden is $245 billion.
Study after study has shown a correlation between weight loss surgery and a remission in diabetes, oftentimes allowing patients to stop taking diabetes medications. While doctors don’t recommend surgery as a cure for diabetes, it’s an amazing bonus for those who do undergo a procedure.

Reverse sleep apnea or snoring - Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder where breathing temporarily stops repeatedly. It most often leaves sufferers tired due to lack of quality sleep, but it can even be potentially fatal in some cases.

The less serious, but still problematic issue of snoring can cause issues with restful sleep and make things difficult for loved ones as well. Since obesity is one of the most important factors in developing sleep apnea (and snoring), losing a dramatic amount of weight can help reverse both issues.

None of these benefits are used to justify weight loss surgery on their own. But if you are a candidate, as you can see the possibilities go far beyond the wonderful weight loss results.

Fantacalcio sbagliato, fantacalcio fortunato. Vicia e Vacio, promossi con debito.
Vicia-Beppe 1-0 [12° Florenzi] / Cassano osserva, Florenzi no. gol e dedica in tribuna
1-1, l'ennesimo derby finito in pareggio.
Good Luck  Bad Boy.

"Propaganda attempts to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea." Adolf Hitler wrote these words in his book Mein Kampf (1926), in which he first advocated the use of propaganda to spread the ideals of National Socialism--among them racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Bolshevism.
At the core of the Holocaust we find modern anti-Semitism, the current version of Jew Hatred - that same phenomenon which appeared throughout the centuries, perhaps finding its most blatant manifestation with the medieval Church. The modern German anti-Semitism was based on racial ideology which stated that the Jews were sub-human (untermensch) while the“Aryan” race was ultimately superior. The Jew was systematically portrayed as a low-life, as untouchable rot (faulniserscheinung), and as the main cause of Germany's difficulties
The Nazi ideal of a “community of the people” tapped into German traditions that lauded social harmony over conflict and in addition valued hard work, clean living, and law and order. For the Nazis, this idealized community could never see the light of day unless it was based on racial purity. To this end, the new regime set out to mobilize the nation around certain missions, including the elimination of recognizable social types (and stereotypes) who disturbed the peace or who did not conform to well-established German values, but also those who did not fit into the white “Aryan” race.
Nazi Propaganda
Auschwitz: Inside the Gas Chambers
The first transports of Jews arrived in the camp from Silesia at the beginning of 1942, on 15 February the first transport of Jews who have been arrested by the Gestapo arrived in Auschwitz from Beuthen. The Jews are gassed in the morgue beside the crematorium. The transport arrived by rail at the unloading ramp near the camp. From there they were escorted by the SS to the courtyard of the crematorium. In the meantime, all approach and transit roads were cleared and closed.

After undressing the victims were led into the morgue-cum- gas chamber – where they were told they were going to have a shower, after which they would receive a meal and be assigned to work.

The moment the gas was introduced, in order to drown out the screams and groans of the dying people, the motor of a lorry, parked there for this purpose, was switched on.

Initially the process of killing and ventilation of the gas chamber lasted several hours. Later, after the installation of ventilators, this period was shortened to about an hour.
Death of the people inside the gas chamber occurred after a few minutes as a result of internal suffocation caused by the prussic acid halting the exchange of oxygen between the blood and tissues.

Those standing near the shafts died almost instantly, those who shouted, the old, the sick and children also died a quicker death.

In order to ensure that no one remained alive, the gas chamber was not opened until half an hour had elapsed. In periods when the pressure of incoming transports was particularly intense, the gassing time was shortened to ten minutes.

Most of the corpses were found near the door through which the victims had tried to escape from the spreading gas. The corpses, which covered the entire floor of the gas chamber, had their knees half bent, and were often cloven together. The bodies were smeared with excrement, vomit and blood. The skin assumed a pink hue.
Economic Exploitation
According to Hitler’s plans, the Jews of Poland were to be quickly exterminated, and then their property and possessions were to be exploited for the good of the Reich. But conditions soon necessitated the injection of a new element into the plan – the exploitation of Jewish labour. The SS did not despair at being thwarted from their final goal. Not only did they rent out Jews to industry and to the military, but they conceived of a plan to exploit Jewish labour themselves so the SS could become economically independent of both state and party. Besides using Jewish labour in SS industries, they exploited Jewish property and possessions. That far sighted enterprise enabled the SS to become a state within a state, industrially and economically, as well as politically and militarily. Himmler entrusted the development of the SS industry to Amstgruppe W of the WVHA, which was headed by fanatical Nazis, like Oswald Pohl, who had transformed themselves into ruthless businessmen.
First the Jews of Poland were deported from the large ghettos where they had been concentrated – second the majority were killed – third the labour of the remaining Jews was utilised for private and SS industries and fourth , Jewish labour was used to exploit Jewish personal property.

And the two major centres for the exploitation of that labour were Majdanek and Auschwitz.. It was Majdanek and its sub –camp at the Old Airfield that received the bulk of the Jewish possessions within Poland. Every watch, gold fountain pen and pair of shoes represented a dead man, women or child – and monetary profit for the SS.

On 26 September 1942 SS General Frank issued basic instructions to the WVHA agents in Majdanek and Auschwitz on the utilisation of property resulting from the resettlement of the Jewish population.

Prior to December 1943 the WVHA collected primarily at Majdanek / Lublin Old Airfield personal property of Jews in the Lublin area alone valued at more than 180 million Reichmarks- or at the exchange rate of 2.5 $72 million. That figure included foreign currency of forty-eight countries, with $1 million in US money.

Much of the money went into a revolving account used to finance SS economic enterprises.

What Happens to Unsold New Cars?
You've surely been on the highway next to one of those large 18-wheelers transporting half a dozen or so vehicles that are fresh off the line to their new home on a dealer’s lot. However, those lots are seldom empty, so what happens to the cars that haven’t sold when space has to be made for these newer models? There are a few options.

Price

First, the dealership is likely to drop the price. If there are still no bites, the price may drop even more but now with decreased rebates so the dealership can still recoup their investment. There might also be a special employee pricing offered. As time goes on, special financial offers may be tacked onto a vehicle such as zero percent financing and other incentives. After a significant amount of time, the dealer may simply want to cut the loss and drastically reduce the price in a last ditch effort to move it.

Trade

A dealership may contact their counterparts in other locations where the vehicle may have a better chance of selling. The price may have to be reduced, but there is a greater chance of recouping a significant amount.

Auctions

Some of these vehicles may be sent to auto auctions where smaller dealerships are looking to increase their inventory with “new” stock at below market prices. They, in turn, can sell to their niche customer base. Auctions can attract smaller dealers who come in search of quality cars or shop on a client’s behalf. Rental companies may also consider the vehicle for its fleet. The problem the dealer faces with this option, however, is that they have to pay a cut to put their already under-valued vehicle up for auction, recouping even less of their investment.

Donating

While this occurs rarely, a dealership can offer a vehicle up as a donation for a specific cause or to a nonprofit. The charity, in turn, can auction off the vehicle to increase their funds. The info on the amount that they received is given to the dealer to use for tax credit. This method provides the dealership with the least amount of financial gain as there may be a cap to the amount the company can write off.

Storage

If the space is needed and a sale is not eminent, the vehicle can be moved to a storage lot temporarily. There are numerous locations where automobiles without homes sit in long lines waiting for demand to increase, as might be the case in a time of economic downturn, or when another decision is made about its fate.

Unsold “new” cars can be hidden gems on the lot when dealers are trying to move them. Just a few months can make a huge difference in what a dealership is willing to take to move it to make way for incoming inventory.

Hi! My name is Tatum Piere and I have been active in the dairy showing business since I was eight years old. I show Jersey cattle and only Jersey, I’m very loyal to the small and friendly breed of cows that I've grown up to be familiar with and fall in love with. Never have I ever even associated with any other breeds of dairy cows, it’s just not my style!

When my family bought a dairy farm back in 2006, my cousins and I were ecstatic! Finally we would have a whole farm all to ourselves where we could run around and do stuff that normal kids do. None of us had ever been scared or intimidated by the hard hoofed moo-moo’s, so it was fair to say owning a farm of 300 Jersey’s would be so much fun, and believe me when I say it was and still is!

There wasn't a day that went by that we didn't climb on top of the hay bales and play with the baby day old calves. In addition to doing some daily feeding, we also had to train for the county fair every August. Jersey’s are known for their gentle nature, so it was no surprise that my cousin and I didn't have much trouble walking them like dogs! Despite the slobber and the occasional crushed toes, the purple ribbon at the end made it all worth it.

Throughout the years of showing I've learned a lot about self-determination and self-confidence. Even if you don’t have a clue what you’re doing, smiling is key! Some of those lessons are universal for a lot of things in life, and that’s why I’m so appreciative of my favorite Jersey cows.

It was a beautiful day to go fishing, so my brother, sister, my dad, and I hopped into the truck and went on the lake. There had been a snowstorm a few days before, so the main road on the lake was blown shut. The day before we went fishing, a person plowed open the “super highway.” All the snow from the road was pushed on the side where our fish house was, and it melted so you could not tell there was slush. We did not know that before we went onto the lake.

“Kids roll down your windows, just in case we fall in,” dad said as he drove onto the lake.

“Oh that is real reassuring,” I said under my breath.

As dad drove us onto the lake, we took his advice and rolled down our windows. We also unbuckled our seatbelts just in case we would go under, so we would not have to worry about trying to unbuckle while under water. Driving on the ice was a bit scary because you never knew how tall the snow drifts were or when you would hit a slush spot. Usually, if locked in four-wheel drive while on the plowed paths, a vehicle would not get stuck. Dad was not one of those people who put their fish house right off the plowed path. He put his fish house about three miles off shore, which was a bit insane. I prefer to be closer to shore in case something were to happen, like falling through the ice. Dad preferred walleye fishing, while I preferred sonnies and crappies.
We were driving off the beaten path on the lake when all of a sudden the truck tires started spinning. Little did we know the truck was in a huge patch of slush. My dad hit the gas and tried turning the steering wheel to get some traction; the truck just went deeper into what we thought was snow. My siblings and I got out of the truck to try to put snow under the tires and were instantly knee deep in slush. Turned out, there was a thin coat of snow over inches of slush. My dad looked like he just saw a monster when he saw us knee deep in slush.

“Ok, kids get back in the truck and I’m going to call Tom to see if he can come and pull us out,” dad said.

We got back into the truck and waited for Tom to come and rescue us. I did not have a good feeling about this, but my siblings never took me seriously because I never had a good feeling about going onto the lake. Several minutes later, Tom arrived and hooked on. I decided to wait on the ice just in case the truck was to go under. He hit the gas and our truck jerked to the left into even more slush. This was not good because our truck started pulling Tom’s truck in the slush too. After a couple of more attempts, both trucks were officially stuck.

“Kids wait on the ice until the truck gets pulled out,” dad instructed.

Tom and dad decided to call another friend, Tim, to see if he could get both of their trucks out of the slush. Tim came and hooked on to Tom’s truck and was only pulled back. Dad’s and Tom’s trucks were both pulled even farther back into the water. All of a sudden, we heard glug, glug, glug, and dad’s and Tom’s trucks started filling with water. I, for sure, thought they were goners, but miraculously they stopped sinking just as the water reached up over the hood.
By this time, there was a crowd forming close by to watch what was going on. A couple of the people with bigger trucks came over and offered to hook on. One of the men suggested getting a big spool from the power company to help lift the back of the truck out of the water so they could then pull out the truck. They would have liked to lift the front end out because it would be easier to hook on to but it was too dangerous to walk in front of the truck because a big hole of water opened up in the front of the truck. Someone brought a big spool from one of the local power companies and towropes were passed around to those who were going to help pull the trucks out of the water.
The spool was rolled in front of Tom’s truck and a towrope was wrapped around the spool and then attached to his truck. Seven trucks hooked onto the two in the water, so they were now in a line. Once all of the trucks had been hooked on, all the men got in their trucks. A guy stood in front of the line of trucks and signaled to the men to start moving forward. There was so much energy from the trucks pulling out the two that were stuck, Tom’s went right over the spool and smashed onto the ice. The cab was destroyed and dads started rising up over the spool but the front guy stopped just in the nick of time.
Tom’s truck flipped back onto its wheels, and both trucks were pulled to the safety of the plowed road. The doors to dad’s truck opened, and it was like Niagara Falls as the water gushed out. Tom’s truck was opened the best they could so the water could gush out. The trucks were pulled to my dad’s shop, which was not even a quarter mile down the road. We had to ride with other people because of the wet cab, and the engine was ruined so it would no longer start; not that dad was willing to take the chance of starting it.
After all the commotion of pulling out the trucks, five hours had passed. There was a big gathering at the shop and a celebration of a safe rescue were in progress when someone brought up telling my mom what had happened. During the catastrophe, nobody had bothered to called my mom and inform her of what had happened. My dad dreaded making the call because he knew she would be very angry. He not only totaled his truck, but she got a new vehicle two months before, and dad had just gotten a new truck the year before. He has two trucks and the one that was totaled was the “older one.” They really did not need another vehicle payment. Dad made that dreadful call, and you did not need it on speakerphone to hear what she had to say. Everyone stood there in stunned silence while mom chewed dad out. She was so loud that dad held the phone away from his hear and started making faces at the phone (she does not know he does that sometimes) while the rest of us tried to stifle our laughter.
Two days later, a brand new silver Chevy pulled into the driveway. Dad had been looking at trucks for a while before the incident happened, so he was able to go check out some of the better trucks. The insurance money helped to cover some of the cost of the new truck. Dad is very daring because a week later he took out his other truck (not the new one) to get his fish house off the lake. Mom forbade him to drive his trucks onto the lake, but dad still does sometimes. Usually he drives one of the four wheelers on the lake.
The anglers who were there that day are more cautious about going onto the lake. There was many rumors made up about what we were doing on the lake and how the trucks fell through, but none of them was close to the real reason. Rumors can get very out of hand. Take our advice and know the local snowfall amounts, and the location of the slush.

This could be you if you're not careful!

Fashion is a form of self-expression. You can dress according to your mood, the weather, or for some, what is trending. That is my main attraction to fashion, without any words, you can present yourself in such a way that someone may draw a conclusion as to who you are. Whether or not that is what someone intends to do, naturally, we sum up people based upon a first impression; some of which is external presentation.
Ever since I was a little girl, I gravitated to the world of fashion. I would dress up in my “Sunday best” to go play outside in the mud (because I was both fashionable and a tomboy, somehow), as long as I had on a cute outfit and shoes with bows on them, I was a happy kid. Growing up my parents did not value materialistic things, so acquiring this desire for fashion was something that truly came naturally. I was home schooled, and sheltered, there wasn’t any Glamour magazines or Cosmopolitan to reference or inspire some sort of interest. Going through high school, a few of us girls connected with the same common goal, to make the yearbook as the “most stylish” every year… ah, life goals… needless to say, we go the job done 9th-12th grade. I even won a contest we all created. The goal was to wear a different pair of high heel shoes every day, for the entire duration of the school year. With a little savvy shopping, and probably more effort put towards it than my school work, I won 100$.
Fashion is a staple I use in my everyday life. I feel it is easier to project confidence with a good outfit, which causes a ripple effect for an efficient day. When you’re put together and clean, you look professional and capable. It does matter how you dress, and it shouldn’t be classified as “superficial,” “materialistic,” or even “high maintenance.” It should be interpreted as class and sophistication.

Hi! I’m Elizabeth Vinson, the author of this magazine. Thank you for choosing to read about the very real issues women in the Middle East still face today. I am sixteen years old and a junior in high school. I have one younger brother, a dog and a cat. I truly love sports and I enjoy being with my friends and family.

I chose to write about this topic because of Malala Yousafzai. She was a young girl who stood up for women’s education in Pakistan. Because of her bravery, the Taliban shot her in the head. Against all odds, she survived. Hearing about this really opened my eyes to the struggle in the Middle East.

I hope to open American’s eyes to the differences in culture and expectations. I hope everyone who reads this issue gains a better understanding of the struggles Middle Eastern women face every day.

Hello! For all you college students out there, we know the struggle is real. I am a college student at Alexandria Technical and Community College. I grew up on a farm, and went to high school in a small town, population 2,000. After I moved away from home, everything changed and my whole life was turned upside down.
I was faced with the challenge of buying my own groceries, paying rent, homework, and managing my time! Okay to be honest, it wasn’t that bad at all! There were times that I could have used some help though. I am expected to pay my own way for college which means tuition, books, rent, food, toiletries, clothes, etc. that all adds up quickly. Now, there is no one telling you what to do or how to do it, and that can be either good or bad. Living with someone new, someone you have never met before can be quite the challenge. It was hard for me to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people.
College was like a new beginning for me, and so far I have had a blast. I am working at a department store, going to school, and managing my social life. It isn't easy, but it is possible. Make sure you are having fun and make smart decisions. Best of luck to you!
