Nigerian Businesswomen Demolish Boy's Club in Oil Industry

Nigerian Businesswomen Demolish
Boy's Club in Oil Industry

In Nigeria, there is no glass ceiling thick enough to hinder its powerful businesswomen from dominating the oil and gas industry. The boardrooms are still predominately male, with female employees making up only 11% of its numbers and a dismal 1% in executive positions. However, business savants like the Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke are breaking new ground for women in their country. Diezani Alison-Madueke holds the office of one of the top two biggest cabinet positions in Nigeria. She is also a symbol of empowerment to women in her nation.

The oil and gas industries have been the backbone of this West African country since the 1970’s. The article titled, “Economic Growth in Nigeria- Impact of Oil Industry,” describes these industries as the “mainstay of the contemporary Nigerian economy.” As a nation, it is the third largest oil producer in Africa and 14th in the world. While men are traditionally found in these trades, the highest two positions are held by two experienced women. “‘The fact that two of the biggest cabinet positions in Nigeria, petroleum and finance, are held by women, shows how far we have come,’ she [Diezani Alison-Madueke] told at a recent meeting in Vienna, referring to the other prominent female member of the cabinet - Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala” (Nigerian Businesswomen Work to Change Face of Oil and Gas Industry).

These women are not only making their claim for their gender in Nigeria’s most important industry, but they are also creating opportunities for other female entrepreneurs to climb the corporate ladder. Nigeria is making plans to undergo the process of indigenization. Essentially, it’s changing the oil industry to offer more jobs and management positions for its citizens, male and female.
One of the factors believed to have influenced these businesswomen’s success is the tendency for women to be perceived as more trustworthy than men. According to Doctor Amy Jadesimi, the managing director of the petroleum provider Ladol, “… ‘To be honest, people trust women more,’” (Atlanta Blackstar). Diezani Alison-Madeuke goes further to emphasize what truly brought them so far in this nearly all male profession, “We are there not because we are women. We are there because of our competence as managers” (Atlanta Blackstar).

These incredible businesswomen are realizing their full potential and are refusing to stop until they reach it. Their efforts to make it possible for other women to succeed in business have not only greatly affected the community and industries in Nigeria but have also inspired women in other African countries, like Ghana and Uganda. According to Ghana Oil in their article "Women Have Prospects in Oil and Gas Industry in Africa – Geologist," “‘The emerging oil and gas industry both in Ghana and in Uganda have a lot of prospects and potentials for all women in the two countries,’ Ms. Lyoidah Kiconco, a Ugandan Geologist, said on Tuesday, ‘All the women need to do is to get the required training that will enable them to fit in the various areas available in the sectors’… Ms. Kinconco asked governments in both countries as well as oil companies to assist women to train in the oil sector so that they could also contribute their quota to the industry.”

Nigerian businesswomen are thriving in the corporate world of a dynamic and vast industry. By breaking through the gender barrier, defying outdated conventions, and working hard in their respected career, they’ve earned their spot at the top. The challenges that the first determined women faced can be more easily overcome now that they have paved the way for more skilled women to follow. The oil industry in Nigeria is not a Boy’s Club anymore.

STEWARDSHIP
Benedictine Hallmark
was immediately questioned by my friends about my choice of portraying Stewardship as the Benedictine Hallmark for this task. Unfortunately and probably because, some people sees the hallmark as fairly less religious over others especially the ones focusing on Prayer, Love of others and etc. However, In my perception, I believe that stewardship as a hallmark that deserves equal attention and equal importance and has the same religious or Christian value especially in our condition nowadays; we have been haunted with tremendously destructive disasters, worsening floods and even awaiting extinctions of animals causing biodiversity to collapse; deadly diseases and sicknesses are already becoming a huge threat for humanity because of the imbalances that the Earth unfortunately suffers.
In that sense therefore, we must ask ourselves: How can we really profess love and care for other people if we cannot do the same for the things and creatures that surrounds us- the “other” creations of our God? People have to start reinventing the notion that we are the supreme creatures here in our Earth, that we can just do anything to it and its inhabitants. In addition, we also now have that need to remind ourselves that we are living in an interconnected world: Whatever we do to our nature will have an impact to others and even to ourselves.

"Stewardship is an act of showing humility by removing the concept that we are the 'superior' creatures"
For me, Stewardship is not just professing love and care for God’s creature, it is not just connecting ourselves with nature, but an act of connecting with God as well. Further, stewardship is an act of showing humility by removing the concept that we are the “superior” creatures. Also, It is a form of discipline, listening, obedience and respect to the needs of God’s creation: the Earth and the ones depending on it.
I
We should also look at stewardship as a practical method by which we can solve our environmental issues. If policies and rules for sustainability won’t work, then we have to alter our values through religion by strengthening the Benedictine Hallmark of stewardship to fix the grass roots of our environmental problem- selfishness and lack of care for the fruits of our Earth that was given by God. Stewardship therefore is a reminder that this Earth is one of the greatest gift that God has given to us and we should be a good care taker of it.

2014 NBA Preview: The Orlando Magic

#26 Orlando Magic
Remember that NBA Finals when a Dwight Howard led Magic team played Kobe Bryant and the Lakers back in 2009? Well if you do congrats, because I barely do.. I was still in high school, and that’s how long it’s been since the Magic have truly been relevant. In fact, there is no one left on the Magic roster from that 2009 team. Jameer Nelson was the last dude from that team that stuck around, but he bounced this summer for the Dallas Mavericks.
When I first looked at the Magic roster for this upcoming season, two words immediately came to mind: “ew” and “gross”.. Then after looking at it again, I kind of laughed to myself because there’s no buttering this one up, the Magic are going to be awful this season. They’ve literally invited eight new people to their training camp that weren’t on the team last year. Head coach Jacque Vaughn will have his hands full this season as he tries to make lemonade with no lemons.
The Magic have added two veterans in Ben Gordon and Channing Fry through free agency, and both should be productive players for the Magic. But adding two guys that are on the down hill slope of their prime (if they ever had one) won’t necessarily translate to more Magic wins. They also added Evan Fournier from the Nuggets. I liked his game when he was coming into the league a few years ago, but he’s yet to show the finesse scoring that was so highly touted when he came over from Europe. Fournier did have a stellar game against Portland last season, so maybe he's making strides (video to the right). Orlando is an extremely young team, which gives them promise in the future… but in an epically distant, far away kind of future.
I’ll start by talking about the player I really like on this team, who was actually acquired via the draft, and that’s point guard Elfrid Payton Jr. Not many hoop fans know exactly who he is, because people rarely got to watch him play since he played college ball at Louisiana Lafayette. Let me go ahead and let all of you know now, that this dude will be a star in this league. Don’t believe me? That’s fine… but no one thought a kid (actually a man) they'd never heard of out of Weber State named Damien Lillard was going to be good for the Blazers either. Even though it’s not often, there are occasional hidden gems that pop out of small colleges just like Lillard and now Payton Jr. He is a dynamic point guard and an aggressive defender that really pushes the tempo on offense. Even though it won’t be next season, his game will translate well with the other young, athletic players the Magic have in Victor Oladipo and Aaron Gordon
I love Oladipo’s game, I really do. My only question is: Will ever be able to turn into the “go to guy” on any team? He averaged 13 points on only 12 shots a game, but his outside shooting really needs to get better. In order to be an elite scorer in this league, he will have to be able to light it up away from the rim. He’s already a great all around player, averaging four rebounds and four assists as a rookie. He was also apart of the Team USA select squad this summer that played against the USA roster that competed in the FIBA World Cup. It can only benefit a young player to play against some of his best peers in an environment filled with distinguished coaches such as Coach K and Jim Boeheim.
Nikola Vucevic will also be another Magic player that will have a lot of production. He's probably the best player/piece the Magic received in the deal for Dwight Howard. Vucevic is virtually a guaranteed double double every game with 14 points a clip to go along with eleven rebounds. He needs to be more aggressive on the offensive end, though. Last season he only averaged two free throws a game, if Vucevic can get that number up, he could be recognized as a prolific scorer to go along with his stout rebounding.
I also believe Tobias Harris and Maurice Harkless will have a decent season. Both are under the age of 22, so like I said before, this team has tons of promise moving forward. Also, If rookie Aaron Gordon can figure out how to score anything but a layup, then maybe the Magic will surprise me. I think Gordon’s game will take a couple of years to develop into what the Magic want. He can dunk it from the free throw line, but he can’t even make a free throw SMH!
Potential Starters
PG: Elfrid Payton Jr.
SG: Victor Oladipo
SF: Mo Harkless
PF: Channing Fry
C: Nikola Vucevic
Check back tomorrow to see who I ranked 25th in the "HOOPSAHOLIC NBA Preview"

THE WEEKEND THE GIRLS TOOK MELBOURNE
SO THIS WEEKEND MYSELF AND 5 FRIENDS FLEW, ADULTLESS, TO MELBOURNE TO ESCAPE SCHOOL LIFE AND HAVE A FUN GETAWAY! WE COULDN'T GET UP TO TOO MUCH TROUBLE SINCE WE ARE ALL 16 BUT IT WAS STILL SO MUCH FUN! WE DID LOTS OF SHOPPING AND VISITED A LES MIS EXHIBITION ASWELL AS THE ART GALLERY (JUST TO STAY CULTURED YOU KNOW)! THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG POST SO APOLOGIES!!
PRE-DEPARTURE DINNER WAS CARROT AND QUINOA SALAD
Had to grab something quick to eat in the airport before take off as it wasn't until 9 when we got to our hotel! This was delicious but not sure it was worth the $7 it cost me!
DINNER NIGHT 0
Arrived at the hotel and went to pizzeria down the road (the waiter was so hot)!! We got margarita, ham and cheese and garlic bread type pizza. It was all delicious and wood fired mmmmmm. I wasn't that hungry after my salad but this pizza was hard to resist!
BREAKFAST DAY 1
toasted muesli, poached peared and natural yoghurt!
I tried to go for the healthiest thing on the menu but after ordering I realised it probably wasn't as toasted muesli is often covered in sugar! Despite this I ate most of it up as it was delicious! Breakfast was followed by a day of shopping which was exhausting as we walked from one side of the city to the other and back twice!

LUNCH DAY 1
A light lunch at the cutest sushi bar - I got a vego and an avocado & cucumber! I got pushed in front of to get this sushi by a rude woman and her son who wanted the poor man who barely spoke english to pull the cucumber out of the flipping teriyaki sushi! ... anyways this sushi was delicious and didn't cost much at all which was fabulous since I had just bought a $100 jacket and blown most of my money in one hit!
We went to the Nike outlet and I fell in love with these runners! I didn't have enough money for them but they have gone straight onto my christmas wishlist!
Snack was a freshly squeezed tropical juice from this health food store - it hit the spot mmmmm felt energised for the afternoon of shopping that awaited!!
SHOPPING...
The make up section in the Myer on Bourke Street is amazing!!! There was so many different brands you can't find in Adelaide! I bought my sister a few things from Soap & Glory that she has wanted for a while and also got my make up done at Clinique for free!! My friend wanted to try an eyeliner out at Calvin Klein and ended up getting her eyes fully done and eyebrows filled in.... It did not look natural ahaha! The foundation I got done was clinique blemish prone skin foundation and it felt so good on my skin and it didn't feel heavy or like it was going to clog up my pores! I usually hate having my makeup done but this time I didn't mind... too bad I had no where special to go wearing it!
DINNER DAY 1
Three out of six of the girls went to see Les Mis so the other three of us wandered down China Town and decided a Chinese restaurant was probably all we were going to find for dinner! I had these springrolls and some funky looking and funky tasting eggplant curry so I ended up eating a lot of plain rice! The spring rolls were quite yummy though!
After wandering the streets of Melbourne in the freezing cold for half an hour we realised no where was open so we headed into target where the was free wifi and comfy chairs! We
sat in target for a good hour until it had to close so we wandered back to the theatre to meet the girls who saw Les Miserables.
LES
MIS
Last food item of DAY 1 was NITRO LAB it didn't taste too fancy but how they made it was cool! For the coconut one which I got they put coconut milk and liquid nitrogen into a kitchen aid and magically it became ice-cream!!
By the time we got back to the hotel at 11:30 we decided the "night was still young" so we hit the streets around our hotel trying to find somewhere to go! It was so much fun just roaming the streets of an unknown city with no adults! We didn't last long since everything was shut but it was fun whilst it lasted!
BREAKFAST DAY 2 - BIRCHER MUESLI + MANGO JUICE
This bircher muesli was delicious and filling and with this freshly juiced mango juice set me up wonderfully for the day! A bonus to this breakfast was that one of the guys working there was so hot aha! They sold almond croissants and nutella croissants OMG they looked like heaven! I wanted to come back later and get some for my family but by the time we came back they were all sold so I settled for buying my sister a couple of nutella macaroons and my mum and dad a french custard tart to share.
An early light lunch type thing was some sweet potato fries from a completely vegan fry boutique on a side street! They were delicious and hit the spot but left enough room for the late lunch of bruschetta that was to come! This bruschetta was amazing and light but was also really filling since this was a late lunch/ dinner since our flight was around dinner time so we couldn't eat then. In the airport I bought a $5 cup of tea since I hadn't had a tea all weekend and it got taken off me since we got called onto the plane!! At least my bad didn't get taken off me like Claudia's since we were only allowed carry on and her bags were "too big" for carry on even though mine were bigger... you win some you lose some!
And that was my weekend away in Melbourne with the girls! It was so much fun and we are thinking about doing the same once we have finished school maybe to Sydney or the Goldcoast!
