2014 NBA Preview: Th Dallas Mavericks

Posted | Views: 941
#12 Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Rick Carlisle head into the 2014-15 season with a roster loaded with talent. Team owner Mark Cuban isn't afraid to spend money to get what he wants and after a couple of down years after winning the Championship in 2011, Cuban added some pieces to the puzzle this offseason that might just fit.
You can't talk about the Mavs, without first bringing up their German power-forward Dirk Nowitzki. He's been a staple as the Mavs best player since he came into the league in 1998. He's getting older, but last season he still managed to average 21 points and six rebounds per game. He's a finesse player who can knock it down from anywhere he pleases, and with a solid roster around him this year, I expect him to excel even more if he can stay healthy. After the Mavs won the title in 2011, they seemingly tore up their championship roster. It'll be interesting to see if Dirk has another playoff run left in him.
When the Houston Rockets took a gamble at signing Chris Bosh in the offseason, they missed on an opportunity to keep Chandler Parsons on their roster for less than a million per year in what was the biggest bargain in basketball. So instead of waiting around in Houston, Parsons went ahead and signed with Dallas for 15 million per season, making him the highest payed player on the team. After falling to the second round in the draft out of Florida, Parsons has become one of the better two-way small forwards in the league. Last year he averaged nearly 17 points and six rebounds per game. He's also a very good defender with good length. I think this was a great addition for this Mavericks squad that will pay off over time.
Tyson Chandler was apart of the Mavericks championship team in 2011, but he left the team the following summer to join the Knicks. So after three years in New York, Chandler is back in Dallas to serve as their rim protector. Just two seasons ago Chandler was the defensive player of the year, and he also started for Team USA in the 2012 Summer games. He can play, plain and simple and the Mavs are lucky to have him back. Last year he averaged nine points and ten rebounds per game, but now that he's be back in Carlisle's system, I expect his scoring numbers to increase.
Dallas returns Monta Ellis from last years team, and the streaky scorer has fit in perfectly since he's been a member of the Mavericks. Last year he averaged 19 points and six assister per contest while starting at the shooting guard position. Ellis can light it up on any given night, and the opposing teams will have a hard time covering him and Parsons out on the wings.
The Mavericks will have plenty of options when it comes to the point guard position. They acquired both Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton in the offseason to go along with Devin Harris who was on the team last year. Nelson has had a stellar career in Orlando, but most people think he's on the decline after averaging only 12 points per game last season. Felton is coming off a rocky season in which he was in trouble with the law after supposedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend. He's struggled with weight issues in the past as well, so I'm not sure what role he will play on this team. Harris is a guy that's on his second stint with the Mavericks after being traded for Jason Kidd back in the day. He knows the system, and Carlisle is comfortable with him so it'll be interesting to see who plays and who doesn't.
I expect the Mavericks to make the playoffs despite playing in a stacked Western Conference. I doubt they will be able to finish with home-court advantage, but I do think they will at least finish as a sixth or seventh seed. One thing's for sure, I wouldn't want to face this team in the first round of the playoffs.
Potential Starters
PG: Jameer Nelson
SG: Monta Ellis
SF: Chandler Parsons
PF: Dirk Nowitzki
C: Tyson Chandler

THE INSIDE SCOOP
A Rich Performance Fit For Any Coffee Enthusiast
By: Madeline Quinn

You would never think that coffee could brew up so many puns in a performance. Yet, somehow Mr. Bergey, a math teacher and the ITS Director at TPHS, found a play that did exactly that. From punny situations to ironic names, The Pony Expresso definitely caused some great laughs and spilled coffee.
It starts off with the hero Buck Brawn (Cody Whitaker) and his lovely lady Star Bright (Kylie Robinson) shyly falling in love as the town of Waterpit, Nevada becomes mysteriously ill. Meanwhile, the villain Mo Cabana (Daniel Adams) and his not-so-brisk French assistant Fifi Latte (Shaira Benitez) attempt to out-brew the The Pony Expresso, the coffee shop owned and run by Star’s Aunt, Dee Caff, by poisoning their coffee (which happens to be the cause of the strange illness going around).
However their hot plans are turned cold when they discover that Buck and Star’s relationship interferes with them. Mo Cabana, being the brilliant mastermind, grinds up a new plan only to have it soiled again by the temporary sheriff Buck Brawn, who turns him into the Marshall, Palomino Polly (Yvonne Pierce). Thanks to Buck, with a little help from Doc Cappuccino, the beans are spilled about the mysterious illness as well. As for Fifi? Well, her rich, velvety heart prevents her from being too evil, and she becomes nanny of mayor Rich Coffey’s (Herman Johnson) twins, Sugar (Allison McNally) and Spice (Jonah Robinson).
And let’s not forget Star and Buck. In honor of their new relationship, Star officially renames The Pony Expresso to “Buckstar’s Coffee”... or something like that... and then decides “Starbuck’s Coffee” would be better.
This being his first play, the cast and crew thought Mr. Bergey did an amazing job. He definitely was put in in a sticky situation due to this being his first year as director. The cast certainly enjoyed their first production. "It went amazing, it was like one of the best ones I've done," recalls Cody Whitaker, a senior and experienced member of the International Thespian Society.

Togas and Tiaras
By: Rachael Lemon

Anticipation and excitement buzzed around campus this week due to a single event: Homecoming. Throughout the week each day corresponded with a theme. The senior class had the most to gain from this week, the famous toga day occurred Friday, signifying that it was their graduating year. There was a positive turn out in participation from the senior class when the annual photo of them in the togas was taken in front of the library.
For the past week everyone was anticipating who would be homecoming court. Through two rounds of voting, the girls and boys were cut down to the remaining three. The king, princes, and princess were revealed at the homecoming assembly and the queen was revealed later that night at the game. To further the school’s spirit, the student body has decided to show their support of breast cancer awareness month by participating in a pink out. Sporting a pink audience, both JV and Varsity teams feel prepared to bring home the victory.

Funnel Cake and Vomit
By: Makayla Ogdahl and Kathleen Moore

The carnival comes around twice a year, which means twice a year we get to pretend we’re six years old again. Being six means you get to stuff your face with greasy popcorn and sugary funnel cake, and not have to worry about whether or not your coach is going to make you do suicides because of it. It also means you get to risk your neck on rides that are put up in a day, which, to be honest, could be sturdier. And when you put these two things together, you get the one thing that happens every year, and really makes the carnival what it is: vomit.
Despite the bodily fluids now littering the park, people still flood the carnival every time. And sometimes, you just have to wonder, why? It’s actually pretty simple; we go for the food (despite its price), the friends (or whoever we can wrangle into going with us), and the frenzy of the rides (did someone say Vortex?).
In a survey conducted by shouting at random people “Why did you go to the carnival?” we’ve concluded that the main and most important reason we spend five hours wandering Luckie Park is for the food. And by food we generally mean funnel cake, with its generous helping of white, powdered sugar and sweet, sticky strawberries. How can we resist? Its practically calling our names.
But feasting on funnel cake is no fun when friendless, so we drag along whoever is willing to join us. (Usually we just have to bribe them with funnel cake.) And it doesn’t matter if you go with one person or six, the rules are the same: you have to do at least one thing, whether it be buying a custom sweatshirt, wasting $20 failing to win a $3 stuffed dog, or riding the Hammer. It just so happens that you’re usually forced onto the Hammer right after eating that delicious funnel cake and greasy popcorn we mentioned earlier, and your whole ride is spent somewhere in between “I’m pretty sure I just got a concussion” and “I think I’m going to throw up.”
Either way, you’ve created lasting memories from such a small carnival. You were able to finally release your inner-child, which will be tucked away again until the next time the carnival is back in town.

6 quick Relaxation tips

Posted | Views: 1,612
Life can be very stressful. There are many healthy ways to deal with it. In this day and age, it is very difficult to truly relax, but life does not need to be stressful! By taking the time to learn proper relaxation techniques, you can learn how to live life to the fullest, without worry holding you back. Learning how to relax is as easy as breathing. This often thought ‘mythical’ state of relaxation is all about mindset. Picture this: you go to the spa for a massage because of taut muscles, but instead spend the entire time worrying and making a list of all the items that need to be done AFTER the message. You leave feeling just as stressed. Was the massage relaxing like it was supposed to be? The answer is no, because instead of emptying the mind and letting the body find its equilibrium again, you continued to have busy and anxious thoughts. Relaxation is only a state of mind. Try these ideas the next time stress tries to take over!

1.    Remember to focus on the present. Do you often catch yourself worrying about the future? The majority of people would say yes. Huge amounts of our thoughts are wasted thinking of situations and scenarios that will most likely never happen. Worrying does not change the past or the future; it only takes away the here and now. By focusing on the present, you can live in the moment and enjoy the life you have been given to the best of your ability (Pettinger, 1).

6 Quick Relaxation Tips

2.    Your surroundings matter. Subconsciously, the body relaxes and calms due to being in a clean, pleasant environment. Clutter is a stress on the brain because it is a visual indication of all the items on your to-do list. A tidy room is a tidy mind. When an atmosphere is peaceful and tranquil, relaxation will come, making thinking and working much easier. Make the living/working domain one of comfort and function. Try buying a potted plant to brighten up the space. The ability to enjoy its beauty will last a long time (Pettinger, 1).
3.    Meditate. Meditation may help find a type of peace you have never known. By doing this, you become relieved of constant worries and problems. There are many types of meditation. Our personal favorites are mantra, and spiritual. Before you decide to do mantra meditation, find a Bible verse, or positive thought that speaks to you. Chant these words or phrases loudly or softly, whichever you prefer, in choral like rhythms.  As you do this, deeply inhale and exhale.  In spiritual, you focus on communication with God by thinking your prayers, thoughts, and obstacles you have been dealing with in your life by being calm and quiet. Meditation can help you relax and absolve many of life’s stressors (Pettinger, 1).
4.     Productivity not procrastination. Relaxing doesn’t mean you have to spend the day lying on a beach doing nothing all day. It’s important to have the ability to find relaxation in our everyday lives. Break down large tasks into several small tasks and spread them periodically throughout the week or month. Prioritize the tasks you need to accomplish, and then eliminate them one by one. This gives you a feeling of completion with each task you finish. Also, try turning off your cell phone. Doing this not only can give you a break from the stress of people constantly wanting to talk to you, but also keeps you on task. Having tasks done in a timely manner reduces the stress associated with tardiness. Do one thing at a time and enjoy it. When you’ve completed your task, reward yourself (Pettinger, 1).
5.    Take a little time for yourself. Do anything you enjoy that is maybe a bit of a splurge or reserved for special occasions. Go get your nails done! Get a massage! Take a bubble bath with some candles! Go shopping and buy yourself some new clothes! Sure appearances aren’t everything, but shopping sure does make one feel good! It is crucial to take good care of yourself (Pettinger, 1).
6.    Reach out to others. Talk to other people, whether they are a counselor, a close friend, boyfriend, or partner, whomever you feel comfortable talking to. Tell them why you’re stressed, upset or having difficulties. They can offer advice and guidance (Pettinger, 1).
We hope these tips help create a more relaxing and stress-free life for you. One other tip if all else fails is deep breathing. Rhythmically pretend you are inhaling peace and exhaling your anxieties and worries. We hope you now realize relaxation is more easily attained than you may have originally thought. Relaxation is as simple as breathing!

Another type is the animal print! Get out of your comfort zones and be open to try anything! You can have the leopard type, cow, zebra, but our favorite is the cheetah! The best thing about it is that you can have the animal print in any color you would like! Cosmopolitan has a few words to say about cheetah. “Slouchy, pajama-ish pants are so hot for summer. Try a dressed-up pair like Shenae Grimes's cheetah version—just remember to always wear heels or wedges to keep from looking like you rolled out of bed” (cosmopolitan.com). We think it’s a great style. Looking too cool for school style we would say!

Summer days are hot and just terrible sometimes that all you want to do is wear a tank and shorts. STAY STYLISH, BE CREATIVE! We read an article that talked about knotting your top, it said “We love the maxi skirt, wide belt, and wedges, but it's the simple knot in her shirt that makes Minka Kelly's laid back style spot-on. It's an easy way to show some skin, stay cool and look sexy—but not like you're trying too hard. Also, with your knotted top we recommend the cute high low maxis as well!” (cosmopolitan.com). It’s a more of a laid back outfit for a very hot day. It’s not a too overdressed look either. You’re still lookin’ sexy!

the danger of assumption
assumption is the lowest level of getting knowledge. always desire to know rather than assume what has not been spoken.

the danger of assumption creates wrong perceptions over people, behavior, action and attitude.

it is illegal to get angry or withdraw from someone because you have assumed that their action was meaning other wise, seek to understand why they are acting the way they are acting.

relationships can never be built over an assumption. if a man/woman has not spoken how they feel about you , never assume that you are in a relationship with them unless spoken or declared, actions are deceiving but your words are tied to you.

it is not criminal to constantly ask because you want to know or understand you are safer that way rather than assume because you will not have any legal ground towards the individual if you choose the route of assumption.

words make a binding contract, quietness brings peace, knowledge brings understanding BUT assumption blurs your vision.

2014 NBA Preview: The Phoenix Suns

Posted | Views: 993
#13 Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns will be a squad to look out for in 2014 after surprising everyone last year by almost making the playoffs in the stacked Western Conference. No one really gave the Suns a chance this time last year, so it’ll be interesting to see how they perform now that people are expecting them to be good.
Their point guard Goran Dragic who averaged 20 points and six assists last year will lead them going into this season. Dragic made play after play last year for the Suns despite being without his wing man Eric Bledsoe for some of the season due to injury. Dragic reminds people of Steve Nash with his playmaking ability and his craftiness when it comes to scoring. He can shoot, pass and dribble with his only weakness coming on the defensive end of the floor. The Suns run the two point guard offense to perfection with Dragic and Bledsoe both excelling. Last year Bledsoe averaged 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, and was signed to a max contract extension in the summer. He now will have extra confidence and that swagger should translate to the court. The success of the Suns will solely depend on the play of their two point guards.
Not only do the Suns have two good point guards, they technically have three. They signed Isaiah Thomas in the offseason to be the team’s sixth man after averaging 20 points last year with the Kings. He’s a pure scorer who knows how to get the ball in the basket. He will be a nice addition to this improving Suns team and it’ll be interesting to see if we will ever see Dragic, Bledsoe and Thomas all on the floor at the same time.
Two surprises from last season were the play of both Gerald Green and PJ Tucker. Green averaged 16 points per game and he showed off his extreme athleticism on a nightly basis. The former dunk champion has finally found a home in Phoenix after bouncing around from team to team once he got into the NBA straight out of high school. Tucker started most games for the Suns at the small forward position and averaged 9.4 points to go along with seven rebounds per game. He also held the responsibility of guarding the other teams best wing player on a nightly basis, which was something he did well. He’s one of those players that fits well in they system he’s in and Phoenix seems happy to have him.
The Morris brothers both had solid seasons last year now that they're able to pair up together on the same team. They obviously have great chemistry because they’re twins.. duh. Markieff really had a great year last season averaging 14 points and six rebounds. Marcus played well too averaging ten points and four rebounds. They both will be big contributors to the Suns’ rotation and I expect them to continue to live up to the hype they had surrounding them coming out of Kansas.
The Suns have a lot of talent but don’t really have that superstar player. Everyone will need to contribute and play their role in order for them to make playoff push. I really like how this team is constructed from the ground up and I can’t wait to watch them play.
Potential Starters
PG: Goran Dragic
SG: Eric Bledsoe
SF: PJ Tucker
PF: Markieff Morris
C: Miles Plumlee

Let’s start with the beach clothing, shall we? “These cover-ups are way too good to be strictly beach-only. Layer them over one-pieces, body suits, or slips. Belt them. Knot them. Tuck them into a cute pair of denim cutoffs. It's way too hot to wear more than a thin layer of gauze anyway. Or, if it's not yet, it will be in a month or so, and at that point all the stores will be full of coats and sweaters! Just thinking about fall coats in July is making me sweat Credit: Getty Images by Charles Manning” (cosmopolitan.com). The beach cover-ups are definitely comfy and recommended even for a lazy day!

Ole! Get your Spain On!
Meal of the Month
Paella
Have you ever watched your favorite cooking show and an exotic dish called paella (pah-eh-yah) appeared? If you didn’t know what it was, you probably thought it was just rice and shrimp. However, there is more to this dish than what meets the eye… or the mouth!
What is Paella?
Paella is a traditional Spanish dish. Its main ingredient is arroz, the Spanish word for rice. Along with rice, there are many different ingredients in it. Basically, it is a mixture of rice, meat, vegetables and spices. It was mainly fed to the laborers of the field and for meat they would throw in some rabbit chunks, chicken or duck. Most versions today include seafood, but the original

version does not have any seafood except snails which were cheap back then (Corrigan).
Where did Paella come from?
This dish originated on the coast of Valencia, Spain. Valencia is located on the eastern edge of Spain, right on the Mediterranean Sea. Due to the fact that paella started out in a port city, many different cultures on the Mediterranean influenced the foods that go into it (Paella Company). It has a lot of variations because the different cultures used their own traditional foods while making it. It really all depends on the location of where the dish is made. For example, paella in the middle of Spain might have more vegetables or snails. Whereas on the coast, it could have more shellfish. There are also versions that have more of an Indian flavor. No matter where you live, it is a dish that is loved around the world and can be made unique to your taste.
More About Paella
One more history tidbit about paella is that it is named after the pan that it is traditionally prepared in. This pan is usually silver with small little indents in it, but don’t worry, Paella can be prepared in a home skillet or pan. Many Spanish families will make paella for special occasions and have a big bowl of it as the centerpiece for their fiesta. Sometimes families have competitions to see whose paella is the best (Corrigan). Other families eat it as a normal weekday meal.
How to Make Paella
Making paella is actually pretty simple. Back in the day, farmers would take their rice and mix whatever they had laying around the house with it (Paella Company). Even today you can do the same thing! First, you cook your rice. There are many different types of rice that you can choose. Then, you add whatever ingredients you wish to include. You can even use some of your leftovers from previous meals.
Once, you have all of your ingredients together, season it to your taste. Since there isn’t one specific recipe for paella, there really isn’t a way to mess it up if all of your ingredients are properly cooked.
We at Tasty Bytes found a recipe for paella that is easy and has minimal ingredients from Martha Stewart. Located in Appendix A, this recipe is perfect for beginners. However, even top chefs could use this recipe and add their own flair to it. There is not a “wrong way” to make paella.

In this recipe, the chicken sausage could be replaced with chorizo sausage if you really want your dish to have an authentic Spanish taste! Don’t like shrimp? Try something else instead like clams or even chicken. Just because today’s chefs are using seafood in paella, it does not mean you that have to. In fact, the paella you like the best may not contain any seafood at all! It can be whatever you want it to be. Just remember, you might need to make paella a couple different times until you find the recipe that you and your family like the best. Luckily, paella is a flexible dish where anything can be added or taken out if there is a picky eater around. However, one of our mottos at Tasty Bytes is that “you will never know if you like it until you try it.” Don’t let anything hold you back. There’s no time to waste, go turn on some Spanish music, get your Spain on and make some paella!

“You don't need a paella pan to make this meal. Use a wide, shallow sauté pan with a lid. If you are taking this dish to a party, reheat it covered; add water as needed.”
