Friendship After Genocide (Rwanda)

Posted | Views: 18,873

Photographer Jeremy Cowart learned about their story while in Rwanda this summer. Each of Cowart’s photos shows a pair of people: one a victim, the other an oppressor in the Rwanda genocide, a mass killing of members of the Tutsi tribe led by members of the Hutu tribe. The subjects of the photos have since made peace and are shown displaying powerful messages. One says, “Truth restores trust.” Others include “Forgiveness releases fear” and “We restored our humanity.”

“My favorite moment with every photo is seeing the moment when they laugh and you can tell these people really have reconciled,” Cowart said. “It's not a front. There is true friendship that has been rebuilt after genocide.”

Cowart traveled to Rwanda with filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson after being inspired by her documentary “As We Forgive.” He wanted to photograph the reconciliation that has taken place with the help of the As We Forgive Rwanda Initiative. Within each frame, one person directly hurt the other, either by killing members of his family or stealing his property. Each victim has expressed forgiveness, and many have befriended the men who tore their lives apart.

“In America, we can't even forgive someone if they take our parking spot,” Cowart said. But these individuals have forgiven the people who ripped away some of the most precious things in life – family, security, innocence.

Cowart said he was personally affected by their willingness to forgive. Through these images, he hopes to tell their stories of conquering fears and embracing forgiveness.

Innocent, left, killed Gasperd's brother during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Now they stand together, reconciled, where the murder took place, holding hands. "Love is a weapon to destroy evil" is written across their arms.

What's Inside the McRib?

Posted | Views: 27,429

What the hell is inside the McRib?

The popular McDonald's sandwich is back. Find out what's inside — if you dare

McDonalds' McRib and its cult-like following are back. Thank goodness the "disconcerting" sandwich is only returning for a limited time only, says Meredith Melnick at TIME. Because if you knew about all the unpronounceable ingredients packed into the McRib, you might think twice about wolfing down the sauce-drenched pork concoction. Think you can stomach what's inside? Read on ----

How many ingredients are there?
At face value, the sandwich contains just pork, onions, and pickle slices slathered in barbecue sauce and laid out on a bun. But the truth is, there are roughly 70 ingredients. The bun alone contains 34, says TIME's Melnick. In addition to chemicals like ammonium sulfate and polysorbate 80, the most egregious may be azodicarbonamide — "a flour-bleaching agent most commonly used in the manufactur[ing] of foamed plastics like gym mats and the soles of shoes." According to McDonald's own ingredient list, the bun also includes calcium sulfate and ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, among other chemicals.

Ooof. What's the meat made of?
Pig innards and plenty of salt. Typically, "restructured meat product" includes pig bits like tripe, heart, and scalded stomach, says Whet Moser at Chicago Magazine, citing a 1995 article by Robert Mandigo, a professor at the University of Nebraska. These parts are cooked and blended with salt and water to extract salt-soluble proteins, which act as a "glue" that helps bind the reshaped meat together.

Is it really that bad for you?
Well, it's certainly not good for you. Though "slightly trimmer than the Big Mac," which contains 540 calories and 29 grams of fat, says Christina Rexrode at USA Today, the McRib, first introduced in 1982, still packs in 500 calories and 26 grams of fat. And despite its name, one thing you won't find inside a McRib is bones. The absence of any detectable "rib" is what gives the unnutritious mush its "quirky sense of humor," says Marta Fearon, McDonald's U.S. marketing director.

New Boy Scouts Beard Campaign??

Full-grown beards are not just for pubescent youth, college students or hipsters anymore.

A new print ad by The Boy Scouts of America features young boys grinning behind the puffy facial hair in an effort to show them 'one with the wild.'

The au naturale campaign for the organization's 11 to 17-year-old boys appears to fall in sync with their website's pitch of members 'diving into the rugged world of outdoor adventure, relying on teamwork and character to accomplish what everyone else thinks is impossible.'

McQueen - Winter/Fall 2011

This look, simplistic in cut, yet exquisite in silver-embroidered detail, radiates the ethereal beauty of an angel as depicted in traditional Catholic imagery. The model's head is bound with bandages, a move which at once references McQueen's legendary Spring/Summer 2001 Asylum collection whilst also nodding towards the head coverings donned by modest women in Northern European medieval and Renaissance portraiture, such as Johannes Vermeer's 1665 masterpiece, Girl with a Pearl Earring.
