Quick-relief Medicines
These are also called rescue medicines. They are taken:
• For coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, or an asthma attack.
• Just before exercising to help prevent asthma symptoms caused by exercise (Obie).
Tell your doctor if you are using quick-relief medicines twice a week or more. Your asthma may not be under control and your doctor may need to change your dose of daily control drugs.
Quick-relief medications include:
• Short-acting inhaled bronchodilators (Albuterol (ProAir HFA, Ventolin HFA, others)
• Levalbuterol (Xopenex HFA)
• Pirbutrol (Maxair)
• Oral corticosteroids for when you have an asthma attack that is not going away (such as Prednisone and Methylprednisolone)
A severe asthma attack requires a checkup by a doctor. You may also need a hospital stay. There, you will likely be given oxygen, breathing assistance, and medications given through an IV (Asperen).
Asthma care at home
• Know the asthma symptoms to watch for.
• Know how to take your peak flow reading and what it means.
• Know which triggers make your asthma worse and what to do when this happens
(Mayo Clinic Staff).
Asthma action plans are written documents for managing asthma.
An asthma action plan should include:
• Instructions for taking asthma medicines when your condition
   is stable.
• A list of asthma triggers and how to avoid them.
• How to recognize when your asthma is getting worse,
and when to call your doctor (Obie).

Medications for asthma
There are two kinds of medicines for treating asthma:
• Control medicines to help prevent attacks.
• Quick-relief (rescue) medicines for use during attacks (Asperen).
Long-term Medicines
These are also called maintenance or control medicines. They are used to prevent symptoms in people with moderate to severe asthma. You must take them every day for them to work. Take them even when you feel OK. Some long-term medicines are breathed in (inhaled), such as steroids and long-acting beta-agonists (a bronchodilator medications open up narrowed airways and reduce swelling) (Mayo Clinic Staff). Inhaled corticosteroids include:
• Fluticasone (Flovent Diskus)
• Budesonide (Pulmicort)
• Mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler)
• Beclomethasone (Qvar)
• Ciclesonide (Alvesco)
Others are taken by mouth including montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate) and zileuton (Zyflo). Which help relieve asthma symptoms for up to 24 hours (Asperen).
In children, long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids may
slightly delay growth, but the benefits of using these
medications to maintain good asthma control generally
outweigh their risks (Nowak RM). Your doctor will
prescribe the right medicine for you.

Tip-ins From the Holiday Weekend

Posted | Views: 1,232
With another Thanksgiving coming and quickly going, it gave us all time to briefly sit and reflect on what we're truly thankful for in life. There's many things I'm extremely thankful for starting with my family, friends and of course my girlfriend!  But right under that extremely prestigious list of people sits the sport I love so dearly: the NBA. If you can't tell by now I love hoops (read blog name), and the holiday weekend brought plenty of stellar story lines throughout the NBA.
Black Mamba Makes History
So we all knew that Kobe Bryant would be the guy in Lakerland that would have to do most of the heavy lifting, but I don't know if anyone expected a game like he had on Sunday night against the Raptors. In the Lakers' 129-122 win over East leading Toronto, Bryant became the oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double while scoring at least 30 points. Bryant had 31 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists to lead his team to victory and surprisingly hand the Raptors their second straight loss. The Lakers are still bad, sitting with a 4-13 record and in last place in the Western Conference, but three of their four wins have come in the last ten games so they do look to be improving just a bit.
Derozan Gets Hurt
Tragic news out of Toronto that Demar Derozan is out for about a month after tearing a tendon in his left groin in Friday's loss to the Mavericks. Derozan is having a stellar season so far averaging 19 points and four rebounds and leading the Raptors to the best record in the Eastern Conference. It will be a struggle for the Raptors to keep up that pace without their all-star wing man and Toronto opted to start two point guards in the loss to the Lakers. Greivis Vasquez filled in nicely scoring 19 points while Lou Williams came off the bench and added 19 as well. Both players will have to score and defend consistently if the Raptors don't want to lose any ground in the East.
Bucks Ahead of Cavs
Speaking of the Eastern Conference standings, if you take a gander through the current rankings then you'd notice the Milwaukee Bucks are currently sitting as the sixth seed with a 10-8 record while the Cleveland Cavaliers are one sport behind them in seventh with an 8-7 record. This stat would really only be relevant if the playoffs started tomorrow, and they most definitely don't, but it's still noteworthy. Myself along with most every other basketball blogger believes that the Cavs will figure it out eventually so this epidemic is more about the success of the Bucks than the problems of the Cavs.

I've made it clear that I'm not the biggest Jason Kidd fan, but he has this Bucks team playing stellar defense. Milwaukee is currently ranked tenth in the league in opponents points per game allowing only 98.3 points per contest. Point guard Brandon Knight is having the best season of his career averaging 17 points and seven assists per contest. The Bucks also have blossoming superstars in Jabari Parker and Giannis Antetokounmpo that are getting better every night. They're only five wins away from matching their win total from last year so it'll be interesting to see if they can keep it up.
The Return of Russell
I blogged last week about my overwhelming excitement for the return of Russell Westbrook to the Thunder lineup, and luckily for OKC, the all-star point guard was back and better than ever on Friday night against the Knicks. The Thunder walked away from the game with a blowout 105-78 win against a New York squad that was without Carmelo Anthony. Westbrook was phenomenal from the tip of the game, and he set the tone early and often, finishing with 32 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. He's the first person since the start of the shot clock era who's recorded 32 points and eight assists in only 24 minutes of game action. Westbrook was unstoppable and his teammates as well as the OKC crowd really fed off of his energy. Both Steven Adams and Serge Ibaka both found themselves with much easier shot attempts since their defenders were forced to sag off them and help out on the ferocious Westbrook. To top off all of those stats, Russdiculous outscored the entire Knicks team in the first quarter 14-13 while playing only eight minutes.  With Durant potentially returning as soon as Tuesday, we may actually get to see a fully healthy OKC team for the first time this season. HIP HIP HOORAY!!!!!!!!
Warriors Keep on Winning
The Golden State Warriors extended their winning streak to nine games on Sunday when they beat the Pistons 104-93 to improve to 14-2 on the season. Everyone knew the Warriors were going to be good, but in Steve Kerr's first year as head coach the Warriors are more than good, they're incredible. This squad ranks third in the league, scoring 107.1 points per game while only letting opponents score 96.5 points, which ranks eighth. This Warriors team could always score, but now they're a well-rounded basketball machine that gets it done in every facet of the game. They rank first in assists at 26.8 a night while MVP candidate Steph Curry is responsible for 7.8 of those assists and nearly 24 points per contest. Australian big man Andrew Bogut's health has been a big part of the team's success on the defensive side of the floor. He averages a team-high nine rebounds to go with a career high 2.1 blocks. The West is once again the elite conference in basketball with the Grizzlies owning a 15-2 record. Now that the Thunder are getting healthy, and the Spurs aren't going anywhere, the Western Conference rankings will be a fun thing to keep an eye on down the stretch of the season.

Catfish is another word for fake Internet person. There are about 83 million fake accounts on Facebook. A lot of people don’t realize how big that number really is; it’s roughly the size of Egypt’s entire population. All that’s really needed to create a fictitious character is a made up bio and a stock photo. Fake online friends are very common, and anyone could have one without even realizing it if they don’t know how to spot one (Mashable).
How to Spot a Catfish Online
While it can be easy to fool social media users, there are a few giveaways that can help a person separate someone who is real and someone who isn’t. Here are some tips to catch a catfish online.
1) Refuse to Talk on Phone/Skype
It’s easy to pretend to be someone you’re not when all communication is online. It’s a little harder when they try to talk on the phone or Skype because the one being cat fished can see and hear their reactions, which makes it easier to pick up on anything fishy. Catfish know this so they tend to avoid any communication that requires being able to hear their voice or see their face (Crime Wire).
2) Always Traveling
A lot of times, catfish claim they are always traveling so they can avoid questions about where they live. If it seems that their travels take them everywhere expect near you, it might be for a strategic reason. They are trying to avoid actually meeting in person and accused of being a fraud (Crime Wire).
3) The Modeling Profession
If anyone says they are a model usually means that they are recognized as a very attractive person. If the person you are talking to says they are a model, but also has another prosperous career, they’re probably too good to be true. Models, and especially one who has another job, will probably be very busy and travel a lot. Also, it makes things easier for a Catfish because they can almost effortlessly access model photos online and post as their own (Dr.Phil).
4) No Pictures
Proceed with caution if a person isn’t able to send pictures of themselves in this day and age. Now, just about everyone has a smartphone or some kind of picture phone (Dr.Phil).
5) No Webcam
If a person cannot get to a webcam after being continuously asked, then this is a potential warning sign that they are trying to avoid being seen as who they really are, just like not being able to send pictures of themselves (Dr.Phil).
6) Grammar
Many catfish claim to be from the United States, but really they are from a foreign land and English is their second language. This can be the cause of many grammatical errors that most native speakers know to avoid by the time they reach high school. If this happens frequently, it might be because they’re actually overseas (Crime Wire).
7) Extremely Serious
If it seems like that “perfect” person has the instant hots for you, don’t be so quick to assume it’s because of your incredible charm. Catfish often declare you’re their One True Love only hours after having met online. Keep your ego in check and make sure this person isn’t just trying to butter you up (Crime Wire).
8) They ask for cash often.
This happens often. While some catfish do it for the attention, there are a lot more who use people online as their personal ATM and that’s how they make their money. If they seem to constantly have a sob story, such as they got into an accident and can’t pay the medical bills, where they can get help just from getting cash sent to them, it’s a huge red flag (Crime Wire).
Most people don’t think of being conned by a catfish as a whimsical experience that brightens up our otherwise ordinary lives, but it is. Most people truly believe they’re in love. Hopefully, the person being cat fished thinks talking to this fictitious person is an annoying waste of time. Sadly, this doesn’t happen with most catfish victims. The truth is a catfish experience can be incredibly painful. Tricking a person into falling in love with someone who doesn’t actually exist is a cruel game. An instant background check on someone is an extremely smart way to spot a catfish online. It’s pretty easy to fool someone on Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of the social media world. All the person needs to do is set up a fake email account under their fake person’s name, but nobody can fool the courts. Their data can go deeper than a Facebook profile and give you real answers to your questions. If you’re not sure, but you don’t want to go through all of that work, you can also use complimentary people directory to look them up (crime wire).

4k or 5k

On the other side of things, one Wayzata coach says he never tells the kids the distance before they join. He gets them hooked on the sport regardless of the distance. His argument is he coaches the biggest school in Minnesota, so he has lots of opportunities to find and recruit more runners to his team. Whereas, a single a school usually doesn’t have a whole lot to work with. Not nearly as much as a huge school like Wayzata (What's the Right Distance for Girls' Cross-country?).     Minnesota isn’t the only school that doesn’t run a 5K in the United States. There are quite a few more. A couple of the states that continuously produce good runners, even though they don’t run a 5K, are Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Texas. Wisconsin produced the best runner in the United States last year for girls. Molly Seidel easily won her state meet in Wisconsin. She went on to win the regional and National Footlocker meets. She was then named Gatorades National Runner of the Year. Her state win was a 4K, but all of the rest of the races she ran at the National level were 5K’s. It shows that running the farther distance all year long doesn’t necessarily make you better. Hard work and talent can make you succeed at any distant.      Another argument on changing it to a 5K is gender equity. They say girls can do just as much as boys and should be allowed to prove themselves and compete at the same level of boys. Some people argue that keeping the girls at a 4K is a Title Nine issue. Some conferences actually run a 5K for both girls and boys at their conference meets even though they’re in a state that is still a 4K state for girls. Gender has caused a major role in the transformation from girls running a 4K to a 5K. Most people in this day and age believe that Women should be tested at the same standards in everything including athletic events (Christopher Parish).      Changing girls 4K to a 5K would make meet management a lot easier as well. Having both the boys and girls running the same race will make everything easier. You would only have to make a course for a 5K race, instead of both a 4K and a 5K. Even though managing it would be easier it would take a lot more time. Lots of the slower girls that run a 4K now finish the race right around twenty-five and twenty-six minutes. If you add another half a mile on that, some girls won’t be able to handle it, or will still be racing after thirty minutes. This makes everything go by slower, especially when you potentially have four races that could all be 5K’s in a single meet. The four races would include races for boys Varsity, girls Varsity, boys Junior Varsity, and girls Junior Varsity. The Junior Varsity races for girls could get extremely slow and could make the meets a lot longer than what they are when girls run just a 4K.      The increase from a 4K to 5K really isn’t that much of an increase in distance. It is only a twenty percent. Girls are strong. They can handle a half of a mile more in a race. This isn’t the 80’s anymore where people think girls can’t do anything as athletic as males. Girls have developed and have become a major part of sports. Girls can handle the increase. They handled it in the 80’s so they can handle it now, especially with all the new equipment they have to make training and racing that much easier for you (Wisconsin HS Girls: 4k or 5k?).

Bethany Hasz wins state with a 13:53! That is an incredible time for a 4K! That was a great time for a 4K ran last year at the state meet. Too bad next year she will be running a 5K. They have made it official that Minnesota will be changing their girl’s race to a 5K as well. There is many reasons why they have kept it a 4K and are now changing it to a 5K. Another thing you have to ask yourself is how will it affect the girl runners?      Mshsl have kept Minnesota separated from the rest of the nation in not changing the girls 4K to a 5K. Some people believe that girls wouldn’t be able to handle the farther distance. There is a fear of changing it into a longer distance. A longer race may make kids not come out for the sport. They won’t want to run the farther distance. According to Christopher Parish the last time they changed it in 1994, from 3200 to a 4K, they didn’t see any decline in participation. Coaches want to change it to a 5K do to that’s what is run in college and at any national level meet. One small-school coach explained that there are very few runners that will run at a division one school and will have to run a 5K. There is all very few girls that will be good enough to run in national level meets competitively. Many 4K supporters also say that it doesn’t matter the distance. A great runner will be fast in either a 4K or a 5K.

What Makes A Game?

Posted | Views: 1,020
What Makes a Game and Can They Be Art?

Much controversy has taken place following the release of The Fullbright Company’s Gone Home. Gone Home is a first-person interactive story adventure game that has found itself in the crossfire between two sides: people who think their foray into story telling constitutes their title as a video game, and others who say Gone Home is nothing more than an interactive movie of sorts.
In the game the player embodies Katie Greenbriar, a young woman who returns from travelling abroad to visit her family’s new house, only to find that no one is home. Throughout the narrative, Katie’s younger sister Samantha provides context and story through the use of journal entries that the player finds and forces the player to emotionally invest in the lives of Katie and her family. The gameplay in Gone Home revolves around first-person exploration and little else, which would seem to be the cause of discourse within the gaming community surrounding this title (Riendeau). That leaves the community with an important question: what makes a game?

In the past, the criteria for judging what a game is and isn’t was very simple. Do you play it on a screen? It’s a game. Does it use a controller? Of course it’s a game! But in the twenty-first century the parameters by which the images moving across our screens constitute the title of “video game” have become increasingly opaque. Now we judge video games in a much more intricate and subjective way. Is a phone app a video game? Is a text-based adventure game a real game? Some people say so, others will defy ‘till their last breath that Candy Crush or Gone Home is a bonafide video game experience. All these gaming experiences may have some harcore gamers turning up their noses in contempt, but they don’t get to make the rules. The reality is that any interaction with a moving image on a screen via some type of controls are all the criteria for what constitutes a video game. Trying to feel superior by putting down the types of games other people enjoy is simply damaging to the gaming community as a whole. If there is to be a healthy gaming culture; wasting time deciding who gets to join the club and who doesn’t just results in a smaller club.

Now that we can define what games are, we look into what they can be. If you had asked anyone in 1972, when the game Pong first released, if video games could ever become art, they probably would have given you a quizzical look, followed by a curt “no.” However, with recent advances in technology, developers are able to present emotional stories with facial animations, unique art styles, and quality voice-overs. Developers are even pulling mainstream actors into their games, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare starring Kevin Spacey, famous for his role in HBO’s political thriller, House of Cards. However, some will still say that video games can not be thought of as art. The Guardian’s Jonathan Jones recently wrote a piece on why games are a fun pastime, but not art, he stated, “Electronic games offer a rich and spectacular entertainment, but why do they need to be anything more than fun? Why does everything have to be art?” People who try to define what art is and isn’t are practicing an exercise in futility. Why does everything have to be art? Well why does anything have to be art? Why can’t a movie just be an entertaining way to experience your favorite actors and actresses on the big-screen? Why can’t a painting just be a fun way to express oneself? Keith Stuart, also from The Guardian wrote a beautiful counter-piece to Jonathan’s article, where talked about the insanity of attempting to define art. He wrote, “The greatest philosophers in history have floundered on the question, many simply avoided it altogether preferring to grapple with more straightforward questions – like the nature of logic, or the existence of God. Art is ethereal, boundless, its meaning as transient as the seasons. When you think you have grasped it, it slips through your fingers.” In the end, the answer is very simple. Video games are a medium of expression, such as a canvas can be a medium for the ideas of the painter, or the camera the tool of the photographer.

Video games can be many things. They can offer entertainment, relaxation, and unique experiences born out of artistic expression. A large part of art deals with the viewer, and what they perceive to be the meaning of the piece. Who can say what art is and isn’t? So get out there, and play some art.

What is Love?
God is love (1. John). So if God is love, what exactly does that make love? To figure that out we need to determine who God is. We know from the Bible that God sent His son to die on a cross for every sin that has been committed by us (John). This would show His sacrifice. From this we can conclude that since God is love and He sacrifices, the first thing love is, is sacrifice.
What else is God? Well, God didn’t just let His son die in vain. There was a purpose behind it. That purpose was so that our sins would be wiped away and He could forgive us. God is forgiving (Paul). Love is forgiving.
God didn’t do these things because He had to. He chose to do them. God chooses to sacrifice and forgive. Love is a choice. God’s son, Jesus, died but he didn’t stay dead. Jesus rose from the grave and lives forever in heaven with his Father. God is everlasting (Moses). Love is everlasting.

The Biblical Family
What is a family? According to Webster’s 1913 dictionary a family is, “The group comprising a husband and wife and their dependent children, constituting a fundamental unit in the organization of society.” On the other hand, if we type the word “family” into Dictionary.com we will get a completely different definition, “Family: a social unit consisting of one or more adults together with the children they care for (Ammer).”
Where in the past 101 years did we forget the husband and wife part? In our society today a family can be whoever “loves” each other.
That means a family could be two men and two women with their adopted children or even just a home where there are multiple men and women who interchangeably live and sleep together in one “family unit”.
“Just so long as we all love each other it’s cool.” Is that really what a family is? The idea of family has been so construed by our modern world until we think that spouse sharing, homosexuality, and polygamy are all acceptable so long as it works for us and we love everybody.
But this concept of love that everyone keeps talking about is not what love really is. This kind of love is one gland calling to another.

What Gluten Does to the Brain?

Gluten can have harmful effects on the brain. Today, gluten has become a household discussion topic. It’s in almost everything and most of the time people don’t even worry or think about it. Gluten is, “a common protein found in wheat, barley and rye products,” (Fritter). It sounds harmless, it’s in most of our food, but gluten has been shown to act like a drug. It has also gotten a bad rap because it has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Luckily, eliminating gluten can help prevent these diseases.
To begin, gluten acts like a drug. This may sound incorrect because gluten is supposed to be a natural substance in our food. However, gluten is actually addictive. Experts have realized that, “both gluten and casein are broken down into gluteomorphin and casomorphin peptides, short chains of proteins that, should they escape through the gut and make their way to the brain, mimic the effects of heroin and morphine,” (Fawcett). Therfore, gluten acts the same as heroin and morphine (two very harmful drugs) on the brain.
Moreover, it takes the same amount of time to get over a gluten addiction as it does for a drug addiction. According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, “Those eating high gluten diets can expect to undergo 1-3 weeks of withdrawal symptoms upon cessation.” When children go off of gluten, they can even develop, “affective disorders such as anxiety and depression.” (Fawcett). These disorders can take months or even years to recover from. Also, the fact that gluten acts like a drug is dangerous since the majority of Americans have gluten every day. Basically, with gluten, the whole nation is under a secretive, mild drug. A fact that is even scarier is that, “the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has enacted a new standard for gluten-free labeling of foods, it doesn’t apply to other products like drugs and cosmetics,” (Fritter). This makes it harder to find foods that are truly gluten-free. Plus, if a person has celiac disease (basically an allergy to gluten) they could have life threatening reactions due to small traces of gluten in their gluten-free foods.
In addition, the largest problem with gluten is that, “eating foods with high glycemic indexes, which happen to be some of the most gluten-rich foods, increases the chances of developing neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia,” (Ugolik). This is not just a theory that someone came up with. Scientific studies have been done to support the connection. For example, “One is a case series of 13 patients conducted by the Mayo Clinic in 2006 that showed a potential association between gluten and dementia,” (Ugolik). This is not a large sample number, but these diseases have limited data because they usually do not occur until later in life. Due to this lack of research, it is hard to prove that gluten increases the chances of getting Alzheimer’s and dementia. In fact, most researchers and doctors believe that, “not enough is known about the way gluten impacts the brain—or even whether restricting gluten may negatively impact people without celiac disease—to support a gluten-free diet as a preventative measure for any disease, let alone dementia,” (Ugolik). However, since there is reasonable doubt, people are urged to be their own doctor. They should take some time to consider whether they want to take their chances and hope that gluten is not related to these neurological diseases, or if they want to start a gluten-free diet.
There is hope through starting a gluten-free diet. By eliminating gluten, certain neurological diseases can sometimes be prevented. Cutting out gluten does not guarantee the prevention of Alzheimer’s and dementia, “but lifestyle choices are hugely impactful in terms of preventing this and even reversing it,” (Ugolik). Also, people who have had sensitivity to gluten or who just want to be healthier have noticed, “dramatic improvements almost immediately,” (Fawcett) after going off of gluten. This shows that removing gluten does have some benefits. It may be hard to do but if it can help current issues and prevent future ones, it is worth it. Dr. Oz, from the television show, even has an episode on gluten and the brain. It gives many more benefits to cutting out gluten and how to do it. This episode is called, “Gluten Your Body’s Worst Enemy” and can be found at www.doctoroz.com. Overall, removing gluten from a diet can be helpful.
To conclude, gluten is something that should be monitored very carefully. It can be harmful to the brain and the rest of the body. Sometimes it even acts like a drug. Gluten can cause an addiction that goes unnoticed until it is removed. It has also been linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Both of these are neurological disease that can affect a person for the rest of their lives. Often times, they will not be detected until it is too late. Therefore, it is important to consider a gluten-free diet to prevent these diseases. Even though some of the research is limited, it is better be safe instead of sorry. It has been shown in some cases that removing gluten can increase overall health. So even if a gluten-free diet ends up not affecting the brain, it still would be a healthier lifestyle overall.
