Grandpa - Jack HoLman
My Grandpa Jack Holman was bor in January of 1913 in Fountain Green, Utah. His parents were Mormon pioneers that crossed the plains in the late 1880 with their families when the wersterward movement was at its peak. My greatgrandparents and grandparents were sheep hearders. Grandpa Jack loved working outdoors and being a rancher. He raised all five of his children in the Eastern Utah and Southern colorado Mountains hearding sheep. They would spend their winters in town, but when the summer came they spent all summer in the rugged peaks and valleys of some of the most beautiful mountains in the United States.
"Soon after the ewes lambed out on the ranch, and the lambs grew to be about 3 weeks old, we docked and branded them and then took small bands of 150 or so to the foot hills.
During the summer, we were permitted a total of 1200 adult sheep and their lambs on Forest Service lands. So during the latter part of May and into June, we’d drive the flock up to pasture in the foothills above the ranch, taking the ewes and lambs up in the small bands as soon the lambs grew big enough to travel to prepare them to be transported upto the mountain valleys near Lake City.
It was about a 6 mile trip up to the foothill pasture from the ranch. And it was always on a Saturday when the drive took place. Funny, that’s the day when us kids (my brother, Melvin, and I) would be home from school and could take the sheep up... We did this on foot, driving the sheep slowly along for about 4-5 hours, followed later in the day by Dad, who would meet us up there in the pick up and bring us back down to the Ranch.
The first time I went up, the sheep herder went with us. That’s how we learned the way. But the sheep pretty much knew where to go in the foothills. The old ones would teach the new ones, and they would slowly move off in the right direction, urged on by the promise of greener grass. The only challenge here was keeping the little lambs moving along. They’d get tired and want to call it quits. We used to make rattles by taking a half gallon can with a handful of rocks inside, hammer the top together, drive a nail through to make hole, thread a piece of wire thru it, and had the perfect tool for tossing behind the sheep. That rattle sound would get them up and going.
As you can imagine, with the sheep spread out and grazing along the grassy hillsides, rattle snakes would get stirred up from time to time. One day, as we were driving the sheep along, there was this snake, laying there all coiled up shaking his rattle menacingly at us. Of course us kids just had to have those rattlers. Well, we found a couple rocks and then struck the snake on his head, then we stepped on his head to be safe and cut off our prized rattle. Funny thing was we could buy rattle snake in a can then to eat, but we were having none of that snake but its rattles."

This Memory Keepers project was inspired by Lois Lowry's book The Giver. In it she discusses the importance of memories to us as human beings. Memories are a way to be connected to each other, even across many generations. Without this connection we lose our anchors to who we are and who we can become. Also, without the memory of mistakes, we cannot actively make decisions about the future; memories become a source of wisdom to guide us. Finally without memories of pain, we cannot fully appreciate joyful and happy memories.

When looking at the definition of "Feminist" and "Feminism", it's hard not to wonder as to why there is such a fear in young people to admit that they are in fact feminists. Men and women of all ages refer to themselves as such, but while I could go into the historical background for this it is not why I have created this zine.
For me, coming to terms with the true meaning of feminism helped me become more comfortable with myself in terms of the direction of my life as well as how I view my own body (the latter changed as a result of the comfort I had within myself and the new direction I was taking in life).
My experiences with feminism did not begin until I entered college, but I didn't even begin to think of myself as a feminist until the end of my sophomore and beginning of my junior year. While I have always had feminist beliefs, throughout my life the word "feminist" always had a negative connotation. Through the classes that I have taken, the projects that I've worked on, and the people that I have met, I was able to come to terms with my own experiences and see them from a new light. I have transformed from a quiet and shy girl that wanted nothing more than to disappear in the background into a young woman, while sometimes still a little reserved, who can and desires to communicate my thoughts and opinions in all aspects of my life. This transformation included and resulted in me being more comfortable with my body.
As a girl growing up I was never really seen as all that feminine, I was SUUUUUPER skinny without a single curve on my body aside from the shape that my bone structure revealed. While I did have a few boyfriends growing up, I never felt pretty enough. I was flat and definitely didn't have the cutest face and to top it off I've always had such crazy curls -- believe it or not I spent an entire year of high school straightening my hair every morning before school. I used to compare myself to other girls and looked to magazines and television for guidance way more than I'd like to admit. Over the years I did become more comfortable with my body, but I definitely had my ups and downs sometimes seemingly for no reason. My experiences have at times made me question myself, appearance and all, but I definitely am more comfortable with my life now despite any breakdowns that I may have. I know that some people may have certain expectations about what my body should look like but I'm not going to change a single thing for anyone. Yes, I am flawed, but no one is perfect. Half of the images that you see in the media have been touched up. Why else do you think that it's such a big deal to see celebrities without their makeup on? We're used to seeing them with their flawless makeup and outfits but behind it all they're just as human as the rest of us and they have just as many imperfections (but we'll save this talk for a later post).
Long story short, I am happy with who I am now. Yes I wear makeup sometimes and I'm interested in various fashions, but I do it all for myself and that is one huge reason I have created this zine. It's not important for any person to live up to someone else's expectations, especially when it comes to appearance. No one should ever worry if they're too fat, too thin, whether their breasts are the right size, or if they look lean or muscular enough. Society may present a certain ideal in the media, but no one is expected (nor should they try) to strive for these images. You should love and take care of yourself. As long as you do what makes you happy and what's in your best interest, than nothing else matters.

10 Downing Street and London Fashion week are two of the many best of British rarely associated with one and other. One a man's world where a white shirt, black tie and ill-fitted suit to match dominate the politically inspired House of Commons Catwalk, the other inspirationally erratic, ever changing and all powerful, an industry worth billions filled with some of the worlds most creative and iconic individuals.
Ironically the pair have more in common than initially identified outside of individual stereotyping. Both attempting to sell to the consumer, be it a political policy or 8" bondage inspired leather wedge, one looking to gain the vote the other a sale. Two cut throat, dog eat dog industries renowned for foul play and dirty dealings, every good designer like every good politician must practice what they preach, personal brand belief leads directly to outside brand recognition, a household name, a following. From Barack Obama to Balenciaga, from Prime Minister to Supermodel these people are hitting headlines for the good, the bad and the damn right ugly! All eyes are on those in front of the camera and behind the scenes, breathlessly waiting for that all important rise and fall of the up and coming and established.
Sarah Brown, known only to most as the woman behind that extraordinarily dull ex PM a few years back, was appointed Harrods newest non executive director today. The lady herself is responsible for the brands marketing and corporate social responsibility division and commented on her recent appointment saying, "I look forward to my return to business in joining the Harrods Group board and welcome the opportunity to work on the marketing and corporate social responsibility plans for this world-renowned British brand."
Two quintessentially British names forming a union through the corporate world, one an iconic department store the other an uncharacteristic, washed up housewife with a lot to prove? One thing's for sure knowing the difference between Dior and Dolce is no longer an essential when making it in the materialistically vain world of fashion, can any industry survive the commercial stereotype of the new age business woman?
Could be worse, they could have appointed her Senior Buyer!
