2014 NBA Preview: The Toronto Raptors

Posted | Views: 1,196
#9 Toronto Rapters
The Raptors sure did surprise a lot of people last season. There were rumors before the year started that Toronto wanted to "tank" its way to the worst record in the league in order to draft Canadian superstar Andrew Wiggins. Instead, the Raptors did the unthinkable: they actually won. They finished the year with a 48-34 record, and were one of the few bright spots in the Eastern Conference. They were in the top-10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and like Drake told us all.. we weren't ready for the "North Uprising".
Kyle Lowry emerged as one of the prolific all around point guards last season, averaging 18 points to go along with 7.4 assists and five rebounds. In my opinion, Lowry was the key reason to the surprising success of the Raptors, and will be moving forward. The dude can hoop, it's as simple as that. People have criticized his attitude in the past, but under Dwayne Casey's guidance, Lowry seems to have finally found a home in the NBA. If he can continue that this season, I expect him to make an all-star appearance.
One Raptor who did make an appearance at the all-star game last year was Demar DeRozan after averaging 23 points to go with his four rebounds and four assists per game. He's one of the more athletic wing players in the league who knows how to put someone on a poster. People have argued over the summer which back-court duo is the best in the league, and I think the tandem of DeRozan and Lowrey should be in the discussion. If those two guys can improve on what they did last year, Toronto could jump even higher than what I ranked them.
Remember that dude who was a lottery pick a few years ago..? I think his name is Jonas Valanciunas. But in all seriousness, Valanciunas played well last season after a sub-par year before. He averaged 11.3 points per game and hauled in 8.8 rebounds to lead Raptors post players in only 28 minutes a night. Dwayne Casey really wants Valanciunas to become a better rim protector, and Casey believes he should aim to be the best in the league. Most of the time when you think of a high draft pick you'd expect them to be one of the best players on the team. In this instance, Valanciunas doesn't have to be that guy with players like Lowry and DeRozan around him.  Valanciunas will continue to improve and I think we will see a great season and career out of the big man.
Both Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson will fill out the rest of the starting lineup for the Raptors. Many experts believe this will be the breakout year for Ross as he builds off a season last year where he averaged eleven points and shot 40% from three-point range. He was the eighth overall pick in 2012, so the Raptors hope he will continue that improvement. Starting at power-forward, Johnson is a good post player that is known as the "glue guy" on this Toronto team. He's always hustling for loose balls and giving everything he's got, which is why the second round draft pick has had a successful ten-year career in the NBA. Last season he averaged 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds and if he can continue that production into this season the Raptors will be in good shape.
The key bench players for the Raptors should be both Greivis Vasquez and Lou Williams. Vasquez has proven over his career that he's a reliable contributor at the point-guard position and he will be a solid backup to Lowry. Williams had a down year last season coming off of a knee surgery, but before that Williams was considered one of the more electrifying bench scorers in the league. The Raptors have a lot of solid pieces and if they continue to mesh well together, I expect them to be one of the better teams in the East this season. I project them to finish fourth in their conference and will have home court advantage in the playoffs.
Potential Starters
PG: Kyle Lowry
SG: Demar DeRozan
SF: Terrence Ross
PF: Amir Johnson
C: Jonas Valanciunas

2014 NBA Preview: The Houston Rockets

Posted | Views: 1,180
#10 Houston Rockets

Last offseason when the Houston Rockets signed Dwight Howard in free agency, Daryl Morey and the front office staff believed that he was the missing piece for a championship in H-Town. They fought their way through a tough Western Conference, but were ultimately knocked out by the Trail Blazers in the first round after a Damien Lillard buzzer-beater. With a new season ahead of the Rockets, there has been rumors that head coach Kevin McHale is on the hot seat, and he will need to make a long playoff run in order to keep his job. Strap in Rockets fans, this 2014-15 season could be a bumpy ride.
James Harden is one of the best scorers in the entire NBA, but if the Rockets want to make any type of run at a championship, he must learn how to play defense. Harden averaged 25 points per game last season to go along with five rebounds and five assists, but his defense was laughable. It was almost as if he wasn't trying at all (see video). He's made the all-star team both years that he's been in Houston, but to be considered an elite player in this league you need to be well-rounded.His lack of defense was somewhat surprising to me. When he was playing in OKC, Harden was constantly given the responsibility of guarding players such as Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. I don't know if he decreased effort is due to his increase in role on his team, but regardless he needs to figure it out if the Rockets have any type of legitimate shot at a title.
With Harden's less than stellar defense, and the departure of Chandler Parsons in the off season, the Rockets signed Trevor Ariza to a four-year deal worth about eight million annually. Last year in Washington, Ariza averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game and was a key part to the success of the Wizards. I think he will fit well in Houston with the players they will have around him. This is actually his second stint with the Rockets. He signed in Houston as a free agent after a great year he had with the Lakers in 2009, but the difference with then and now is that the Rockets were bringing Ariza in to be the best player then, now he will be a nice role player with less responsibility.
Dwight Howard has widely been considered the best center in the NBA for sometime now, but after a few average seasons (for Howard's standards) people are beginning to question what kind of teammate Howard is. In his one-year stint with the Lakers, Howard burned a lot of bridges and jetted to Houston right when he got the opportunity. Last year with the Rockets he averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per night, but he didn't seem to be the dominating force we're all used to seeing. Howard had his flashes, but ultimately last season was looked at as a disappointment after the expectations were set so high before the season. I still believe Howard is a beast, so look out for a monster year from the seven footer.
As a Thunder fan, it's safe to say that I strongly dislike Patrick Beverley. Despite that, I have to say he is one of the scrappier defenders in all of the NBA. He finally has gotten his chance in Houston, and he's taken full advantage of that opportunity. He took Jeremy Lin's spot in the starting lineup last season, and now he's the point guard for one of the top teams in the league. Last year he averaged 10 points and three assists, but if he wants to make the next step in his career, Beverley must figure out how to set up his teammates better and improve his assist numbers. BTW.. I can't wait to see another match up between him and Russell Westbrook
Terrence Jones had a breakout season last year when he solidified his spot at the power forward position in Houston. Jones averaged 12 points and seven rebounds while displaying his rare athleticism for a player his size. I expect him to continue to improve and contribute for this Houston team. Another key piece to this team will be Jason Terry, who was acquired over the summer. He was bogged down by injuries last year with the Nets and Kings, but if Terry can stay healthy then he will be the scoring punch the Rockets desperately needed off the bench last season.
The Rockets have the talent to compete with anyone, plain and simple. I have them finishing fifth in the Western Conference, but they could easily prove me wrong and end up with home-court advantage come playoff time. The West will be a battlefield in the playoffs, so if the Rockets are in a rhythm when May rolls around, they're a team I wouldn't want to run into.
Potential Starters
PG: Patrick Beverley
SG: James Harden
SF: Trevor Ariza
PF: Terrence Jones
C: Dwight Howard

                                                                   Feel happier

You may think that there’s nothing you can do to feel happier .In reality ,being happier is completely within your control,no matter what situation you are in .If you want to be happier then you have to be willing and ready to change your mind to be more accepting of whatever life may throw at you ,while also trying to change the things that are not working. If you want to feel happier in no time at all , just follow these steps :
1-think more positively : the easiest way to become happier is to make an effort to be a more optimistic person, you may think that some people are more negative than others , but this is a lazy thinking that can keep you from being happier than you are today .your personal situation may not be in your control, but you can always control your mind , and making the effort to look at the bright side of any situation instead of focusing on all of the negative sides you seewill make you be a happier person.
2- apperciate the little things : If you want to be happier , then you have to work on apperciating the small pleasures in your life as well as the bi gones .Stop and smell the roses.Stop and check out all of flowers growing near your house and see how amazing they are .Such these little things may not seem significant, but they do add up.
3-stop comparing yourself to others : If you learn to look at your life on its own iterms instead of wishing you had as much money , as many friends , or the same amazing body as the person next to you , then you will be able to let go of jealousy .Remind yourself that every person has his own strong suites, and that you can’t have everything and neither can anyone else .Focus on doing your own thing instead of looking around you and you will quickly feel happier for it.
4-spend more time following your passion : Anyone would feel happier if he or she spent more time doing the thing he or she really loved. If you are photography fanatic ,spend more time taking pictures . If you love to write poems , wake up half an hour earlier each morning to work on your craft . If you love cooking , make time time to cook at least twice a week . You may not think that pursuing your passion is worthy when you have so many more practical things to consider , but it will definitely make an impact on your level of happiness .
5-Smile more : Smiling more actually does make people feel happier .Even if you don’t feel like you have anything to smile about, trying to smile more than usual will trick your mind into feeling happier.Smiling at the people around you will make them smile back, and being around people who are smiling will also make you feel happier .So ,smiling is a win-win situation .

Early Victorian Era Medical Practices
In the Victorian Era their were many medical practices that in modern times would be considered outrageous. Their were many practices that were used such as.
-Bloodletting
-Purging
-Sweating
-Blistering
-Amputation
By: Jarod Sanders
Bloodletting
Bloodletting in the Victorian Era was a technique used to get rid of as early Victorian citizens called it "Bad Blood". This process was started by putting a leech on the infected area to suck the blood out or using the "artificial leech". This was a tool made to take the place of the leech by puncturing the skin and causing blood to constantly seep from the skin.
(Fun Fact: Doctors let their patients do this bleeding process until their patients fainted from blood loss!).
Amputation
Amputation before the discovery of antiseptic's were a very painful process. Doctors would have to use scalpels to cut through the soft tissue and a saw to cut the bone of the limb. Doctors often knocked their patients out using chloroform before the procedure or gave their patient any type of alcohol to drink in order to deaden the pain in some way.
All practices that were named earlier were advocated by the man above.
Quackery
As the advancement of medicine continued it also branched off into a area of religion called quackery. This religion instead of using what was made by people to heal people believed that if they prayed enough for one person god would come to heal them. Even now this belief is continued rarely in many places in the U.S.
The image on the left is an example of how people in the Victorian Era advertised their "potions" which were said to instantly heal anyone who drank them.
Antiseptic surgical procedures based on the practical application of Pasteur's laboratory work were developed by Joseph Lister (1827-1912) using carbolic acid (phenol) from 1869 in Edinburgh and in 1877 in London. Aseptic procedures followed, involving sterilization of whole environments
Blistering
Blistering was created with the belief that one could burn the infection out of the body by putting a blister on the infected area.
Purging
Purging was the patient regurgitating multiple times until the sickness was said to leave the body, by expelling toxic fluids.
Sweating
The “sweating process” is the process is to be a way to rid a patient of a fever, this process would be put into action by pouring cold water onto the patient and giving them a massage, this process was said to make the patient sweat out the illness from the body.
Before the discovery of antiseptic alcohol or chloroform was the best a doctor could manage to reduce the pain for a patient when performing a serious operation.

2014 NBA Preview: The Miami Heat

Posted | Views: 1,257
#11 Miami Heat
Where are the fans....? This was the question asked by many people anytime they turned on the start of a Miami Heat game over the last four years. Miami sports fans are notorious for showing up to games fashionably late, and even though this maybe an obvious statement, I'll go ahead and muster it out anyways.. There's a lot of fun stuff to do in Miami (duh bro), and the Heat WITH LeBron James wasn't very high up on the totem pole of priorities for the people of South Beach. So now that The King has headed home to Cleveland, how far will the Heat fall on the city's level of importance? I guess we shall soon have that answer, but brace for impact because this could be a hard fall.
With LBJ out, the Heat will turn to 33 year-old Dwayne Wade (insert sad face emoji) to lead the franchise once again. The aging shooting guard only played in 54 games last season and sat out most back to backs in order to rest his ailing knees. Many people think LBJ got tired of not having his sidekick on a nightly basis, adding one more thing to the list of why he skipped the warmth of Miami for the blistering cold of Cleveland. Wade still believes he's an elite player in this league, so it'll be interesting to see how much of the responsibility he will put on his own shoulders to carry the weight of this Heat organization in the post-LeBron era.
I personally believe that Chris Bosh will be the go-to guy for the Heat this season and moving forward. Miami signed him to a five-year max contract, outbidding the Houston Rockets for the rights to keep the 7-foot power forward. Bosh is actually from Texas, so it wasn't far-fetched to think he would team up with Harden and Howard in Houston. Luckily for the Heat they were able to hold onto Bosh, and last year he averaged 16 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Over the last couple of seasons, Bosh has expanded his range to the three-point line and beyond, shooting the money ball at a 34% clip. I've heard some experts say they believe that Bosh could be a potential MVP candidate, and I couldn't disagree with them more. I mean, c'mon man! Let's be realistic. I do however believe he will make the all-star team and increase his scoring average to over 20 points per game.
The Heat had to go out and try to find a suitable replacement for The King, and I think they did a pretty good job by signing Luol Deng to a two-year contract, paying him a little less than 20 million dollars. Deng has been an all-star in his career and he virtually carried the Bulls to the playoffs two seasons ago after the injury to Derrick Rose. Yes, he's aging quickly just like most everyone else on the Heat roster, but you could do worse than Deng when it comes to small-forwards. Last year while playing for the Bulls and Cavs, Deng averaged 16 points and six rebounds per contest. If Wade continues to sit out on the second night of back to back games, I expect Deng to see an increased work-load.
The point guard position will be an interesting dynamic to this Heat team. Mario Chalmers has been the starter the last four seasons in Miami, but last year Chalmers really struggled to get it going in the postseason. For the season Chalmers averaged ten points and five assists per game, but I believe Norris Cole is a more dynamic option for the Heat. Coming off of the bench, Cole averaged only six points and three assists, but he wasn't given much of an opportunity to create. I don't love Cole or Chalmers as starters in this league, but I think as the season goes on, we could see Cole as the main distributor for Miami. The Heat also drafted Shabazz Napier out of UCONN in this year's draft. They mostly took him as a piece to lure LeBron to resign in Miami after The King was very vocal that Napier was his favorite player in the draft. We saw Napier's play making ability all throughout the NCAA tournament last year when he was on his way to winning his second national championship. I don't know what his immediate role will be, but Napier will have a chance to take the point-guard position in Miami and run with it.
Miami also acquired Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger over the summer. McRoberts had his best year as a professional last year in Charlotte averaging eight point and five rebounds. I think he will be a solid contributor in the post for this Heat team. Granger, on the other hand, I don't see fitting in well in Miami or quite honestly anywhere else in the NBA. He's a shell of his former all-star self, and last season Granger only played in 41 games averaging eight points. Every time I see him running down the court I think he could get injured. The most he will bring is veteran leadership, which is somewhat under-rated. When Granger was traded away from the Pacers, Indiana seemingly fell apart the rest of the way.
I predict that the Heat will finish fifth in an improved Eastern Conference. They have enough talent to compete in this league and I expect to see big things out of Bosh going forward. Erik Spoelstra will have a tough test now that he doesn't have the best player in the world to lean on. This season we'll see how good of a coach Spoelstra really is.
Potential Starters
PG: Mario Chalmers
SG: Dwayne Wade
SF: Luol Deng
PF: Chris Bosh
C: Josh McRoberts

Lastly, what should you wear on that wet gloomy day? WE know! Female network states, “The stormy weather we've been experiencing lately has shown all the more how important it is to have a rain-ready wardrobe. The constant drizzle shouldn't put a damper on your style—in fact, it should enhance it! There are ways to bundle up for wet weather in the tropics without looking like a fashion victim. With quality outerwear, intelligent layering, and an eye for mixing and matching, any girl can look her best even when it’s raining out” (fashionnetwork.com). Some of these outfits are so great that they have a name for the wardrobe, one would be “That’s a wrap” which fashion network showed as you can see in the picture to the side how well it describes the name! “Another garment that looks great under unfriendly skies is a wrap cover-up—this piece has the arms and back of a regular sweater, but its front hem or collar are usually elongated so that they wrap around your body, providing extra coverage” (fashionnetwork.com). It looks amazing, as you can tell.

E-Tuning Now Available

Posted | Views: 705
E-Dyno Tuning
E-tuning is a rather simple concept that is very similar to dyno tuning. However, it requires more effort from the owner of the vehicle. With standard dyno tuning, you bring your car to a performance shop with a dynamometer where it is typically rated in horsepower and torque. The dyno technician then performs "pulls", each at different throttle positions, rpm, and load, then adjusts the cars ECU to fine tune the air and fuel ratio to obtain optimal stoichiometricity. After using this information, he then fine tunes the car for optimum power levels.
E-Tuning is very similar, but instead of bringing the vehicle to a performance shop, you can perform the ECU tuning at your leisure. This is very convenient for people who don’t live within driving distance of a dyno shop. While convenient, it requires additional cables and computer software programs that must be purchased by the owner. These additional materials often equate to the cost of transporting the vehicle to a dyno, but can also be less expensive depending on several factors.

A baseline “pull” is performed on the street by the owner to log ECU data and determine a baseline. This information is then sent to the tuner via email, where various adjustments are made to the cars "ROM" file. An edited ROM is then returned to the owner, and then reflashed to the car. Usually more data must be logged under load, so the owner must perform another pull, in order to adjust the cars ECU to fine tune the air/fuel ratio. This process is repeated as many times as is necessary to obtain the desired power levels.

If you’re interested in either service email our tuner, Jordan, at [email protected]
