Scott Backovich is a youth motivational speaker and famous Twitter personality who recently visited our little town of Twentynine Palms to tell his life changing story to Twentynine Palms High. This is his interview:
Q: What’s it like traveling and changing the way people feel about their whole schooling experience?
A: It’s fun. I love being able to travel and speak and more so being able to see the change that students create. Traveling can become really tiring being at 35 states a month, but seeing reactions from students and change actually happen makes it worth it.
Q: What did you participate in during your high school career?
A: I played only sports. I was lucky enough to play in a national basketball league in the United Kingdom but other than that I wasn’t involved in too much.
Q: How do you feel about Twentynine High?
A: It was awesome. I loved it, it’s always fun being in a gym and being flocked by people who have never seen you speak but already love the idea of you. So that part makes me happy. I also always like a school where you're introduced with a little bit of skepticism, which is fun for me.
Q: Feelings on fan girls?
A: Anyone who is willing to show energy and emotion towards something positive makes me happy. Umm... fan girls… Uhh… no comment other than that. I’m staying in a safe spot.
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: To help one person is my goal when I wake up in the morning. If I can help one person that day whether I’m talking to 500 hundred people, 5,000 people, my day is complete. That’s the whole push.
Q: What’s it like being Twitter famous?
A: I don’t know if I’m Twitter famous. I’m not verified on there so I don’t think it counts yet. I’m verified on Facebook. I love being able to talk to people. It’s nice having a group of people that like, if I ever have anything on my mind that I want to vent out to the world, I can and within an amount of time, thousands of people on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram can weigh in and give me feedback or just talk and laugh.
Q: What are some of the best tweets you’ve received?
A: I recently had somebody totally photoshop the “You the real MVP” Kevin Durant meme, but put my face on his body, which is kind of fantastic.
Q: What’s the best life changing stories you’ve heard?
A: There’s so many. But, a life changing moment that I’ve experienced, two years ago, my Dad had a brain tumor. I came home to visit family and I hadn’t slept in about a week because I was living at the hospital. I came home and found out that our house had been broken into. People found out about the brain tumor, and 500 people gave food and gifts. So many, that our whole house had been filled. It took hours to pack it all away. It was awesome to experience the power of giving.
Q: Is there anything you want to say in general?
A: Your problems in life will never define you, but the way you handle those problems will always define you.

Scott Backovich: The life of a motivational speaker

The excitement in the air was exhilarating; the crowd was holding their breath as quarterback Jimmy Shragge hands the football off to Beayahn Carrllo. He weaves through the defensive line, the angry Rajahs grasping nothing but air. Carrllo comes up on the last player between himself and the end zone. He fakes left, spins right; the Indio Rajahs are left in the dust and touchdown! His hard work, dedication, and amazing play lead Beayahn Carrllo to win the Best Play of the Week Award. There are three nominees, each from a different school, who have a chance to win this award. The public votes online for whoever they feel deserves it because of their outstanding play on the field. Carrllo soon discovered that he won the nomination through Twitter. He said he was “very excited” when he found out because he had “never received an award for a play before.” Carrllo’s talent, however, did not come out of no where. He started playing when his cousin sparked an interest in football for him nine years ago, and has been playing ever since. Carrllo explains, “My coaches, teammates, and the thought of being in the NFL motivate me to be the best I can be. I am so confident in myself that I don’t feel nervous about anything.” In fact, he says he feels excited before a game. If you ask Carrllo what goes on in his head when he is playing football he will respond with “nothing really. Just reacting.” For Carrllo, football is natural and winning Best Play of the Week is another step toward his main goal: to be in the National Football League.

Danielle Leon was introduced to the world of cheerleading by her mother when she was four years old. These 13 years of experience have contributed to a huge personal accomplishment: becoming an All-American Cheerleader. Being an All-American Cheerleader is not a piece of cake. It takes more than waving pom-poms in the air and shouting out cheers. However, Danielle, the captain of the Varsity cheerleading team at Twentynine Palms High School, has the honor of becoming one. This summer she went to the USA Cheerleading Camp with the other Twentynine Palms cheerleaders at Knott’s Berry Farm, where she received this honor.
She was chosen out of the hundred plus cheerleaders from several cheer camps all over the United States, who fight for this title. Along with her reward of being an All-American Cheerleader, she will be traveling to Anaheim to perform in the USA Nationals and to London, England to perform in the New Years Eve celebration parade. Danielle says, “I am looking forward to meeting new girls who love the same sport that I love.” Her favorite thing about cheer is “the excitement of cheering at the games and pumping up the crowd, and the aggressiveness at competitions.” Danielle is just getting started on her journey to becoming an even more talented cheerleader.
