Major US Airlines' Profit Increase From 2013
European Union and Flight 17
The Malaysian Airline Flight 17 was headed from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, when a Ukrainian Rebel in Hrabove shot it down with a Russian-Made missile. The plane was hit and fell to the ground, killing 298 passengers and crew. There are 8 square miles where remains of the people who died in the crash could be, and Dutch and Australian search parties are thoroughly looking to find more remains. A little more than 200 people have been found, but about 80 people are left to find. The rebels and the Ukraine government were fighting while the search was originally supposed to be going on, but the sides called a cease-fire so that the search party could find more about the crash and the people inside. The Russian government has been fighting with the European Union about the withdrawal of the ban on Ukraine’s military equipment, which was made in early February. The Russians are mad because they had been supplying Ukraine with military devices and now have to compete with other countries in the European Union. Russia sold materials such as the missile that shot down Flight 17.
The most popular United States airline companies earned about $3.8 billion during the first half of 2014.  "This was a major improvement from this time in 2013, which earned $1.6 billion".
These airlines were also given the leg up by a 2.3% decline in jet fuel prices and a minor decline in maintenance fees and aircraft rents.  In addition, numerous intense weather events interruped air travel earlier this year, including many severe thunderstorms and the infamous polar vortex.
This year, the $3.8 billion was the total profit for the six-month period for these major passenger airlines; Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, HAwaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United.  "The 5% net margin was an improvement of the 2.1% margin reported in the first half of 2013."
This group said that the nine airline companies spent $7 billion to buy and update aircraft and succeeded in reducing gross debt by $1.8 billion.
This group also imagined that Labor Day traveling would increase by at lead 2% over the 2013 holiday (measured over seven days).  Airlines for America expects 14 million travelers, compared to the 13.8 from 2013.  The group predicted the busiest day would be Friday, August 29, 2014.
Dump and Donate
ALS Ice Bucket Donations Reach $88.5 Million
As of Tuesday, August 26, the ALS donations have reached $88.5 million. The support donations are amazing, compared to the donations in 2013 at this time; they were only at $2.6 million.
Known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. There is no cure for this terrible disease and only one FDA certified drug has been developed to increase the survival time. On average, the paralysis or death will happen 2 to five years after diagnosis.
Ready to get wet? Posting a video of yourself being doused by a bucket of ice cold water is obviously the new thing to do. When you get nominated, you have 24 hours to accept the challenge of dumping water on your head or you can just make a donation. You can even do both! When you make your video, you then can nominate others to take the challenge. As it keeps on flowing, more money is being raised to support ALS.
“Under the leadership of our Board of Trustees, we are putting a decision-making process in place to address how this money will be spent. This is isn’t a matter of spending these dollars quickly, but it's a matter of investing these dollars prudently to achieve maximum impact in our quest to help people living with the disease and those yet to be diagnosed,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. This money could be spent in many different ways, but whatever they decide to use it for will be helpful to putting an end to Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Their mission is to help families battling ALS all around the country, and to take part in a global research program focused on discovering treatments and even a cure to ALS.
Now its your turn to join in on this great project. If you have not yet accepted the challenge, Klevine News nominates you to get drenched or make a donation. You have 24 hours, good luck!
