The Miracle Project, a theater-based program for autistic and special needs kids and their families, is expanding faster than you can say awesomism! Based in Los Angeles, CA, this is a word that the group has coined as they pioneer a program that offers a music, dance, story-telling, acting and writing; creating empowerment among children with autism and special needs. This breakthrough “therapy” has been successful in opening up the world inside of autism where typical counseling and medicine have failed. Through these aforementioned art forms, children and their families are brought together to share in a whole new world where anything is possible and differences are embraced rather than shunned. This project is led by Elaine Hall, a mother and former acting coach, who adopted a child from Russia and whom was later diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. Her vision of creating a platform where children with special needs can come together to create and perform has been so successful that she was invited to speak as an Autism Enrichment Program Advocate and Ambassador at the United Nations in celebration of Autism Awareness Day. The project continues to develop momentum and is now opening chapters in NY at the 92 street Y on the Upper East Side as well as in Dallas, TX. Elaine continues to travel the world as an ambassador for autism and has led workshops from Illinois to India. This work is especially important as most funding for autism in these times goes to support medical research rather than for social services and programs for those already suffering from the disease and their families. I don’t see the Miracle Project slowing down any time soon. Keep up the good work!
