You can overcome you’re eating disorder.
“I became anorexic when I was fifteen. In my family, I always felt like I had taken more than my share and my mother told me that she could never give me enough. I’m the second of three girls, and I have two brothers. I had no outstanding family position and felt as if I had no outstanding trait among my pears. I was in competition with them to be thin, smart, and popular. Being thin was the one area I felt I could compete in. This was the beginning of my anorexia. I felt in control of at least something, best at something. I never felt completely secure in being thin. I had to work at it daily, for fear of gaining weight, for loosing self-control. Denying myself food was also a reaction to my mother who though I took more than my share.” –Mel’s story age 15. (Anorexia Stories, 2012)
This is just one example story of a young girl that struggles with an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. There are many other young girls and women out there fighting this illness. 91% of women surveyed on a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting. 22% dieted “often” or “always. 86% report onset of eating disorder by age 20; 43% report onset between ages of 16 and 20.6 (Eating Disorder Statistics, 2014). Eating disorders vary in how someone started having their eating disorder symptoms. How people take care of themselves when they have an eating disorder, and what kind of treatment they will undergo to recover from this mental and physical state. Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that many young teens, young adults, and even middle aged women have problems with. The causes, warning signs, and treatment are all important information to know whether you, or a friend in undergoing this hardship in life.
The term for anorexia nervosa is translated “nervous loss of appetite.” This doesn’t mean that anorexics don’t experience hunger or “loose” their appetite, instead it means that they are obsessed with food. Not obsessed in the way you would think either. Anorexics are obsessed with every calorie that they consume, most anorexics could tell you how many calories are in any specific food. When anorexics look at foods all they see are calories, and potential weight gain (McMahon, 2013).
Cause of anorexia nervosa are different from case to case. It is believed that is a result of a weight loss program gone wrong. Or the diet never stopped and kelp on getting more severe as it progressed. A lot of times females feel as if they don’t have any control in their life, and food is the one thing that they can control. Triggers of anorexia usually happen when a boyfriend, coach, mother, father, or family member tell the girl that she should go on a diet or lose weight. One reason young adolescent girls become anorexic is because they might have been sexually abused when they were young. When they start showing signs of puberty they will stop eating because they do not want to be physically attractive to men. They do not want to be hurt or used again (McMahon, 2013).
If there is ever a concern that about someone having anorexia nervosa there are some warning signs that can watched out for. Anorexics start avoiding certain foods, continually count calories, cut up their food in small pieces, chew there much longer than needed, push their food around in their plate, and exercise for an excessive amount of time. Anorexics will drink up to 30 cups of water or diet soda each day just to suppress their hunger. Anorexics also don’t get emotionally attached to people. They try not to have close friends, so people don’t know that they have a problem. Usually they are the people that will appear to have a perfect life and are also super friendly. Anorexics won’t eat the majority of foods, but they are the type of people that will bake or cook food and give it to others (McMahon, 2013).
Even though anorexia is a fatal condition you can treat it. Just like there is no single cause of anorexia there is no single way to cure it. Every person is different, and will take different pathways to overcome their sickness. Successful treatments of anorexia nervosa consist of a number of numerous people working together. People specialized in nutrition, medical specialist, and physiatrist. Anorexia doesn’t just have to do with nutrition, even though that is a big part of it. Anorexia nervosa is a mental state of mind, you think that you are overweight, and you perceive that you are overweight. With this mental perception it is hard to stop what they are doing to themselves, because in their mind they are helping themselves by not eating. The sooner someone starts treatment for this illness the better they have at overcoming it (McMahon, 2013).
Anorexia nervosa can be a heartbreaking illness to the person that is undergoing it, and to the loved ones that are helping fight it. It can be a slow agenizing process of realizing that person has a problem, and establishing a treatment program and sticking to. Many people that have or had this illness will tell us that they want to get better but just don’t know how. Here are some quotes of girls that are struggling with anorexia (McMahon, 2013). “You don’t control your sickness, it controls you.” – Jade. “Life as an anorexic is no way to live, it’s a way to die.” –Anna Claire.

Vitamins are our friends!
Having a good nutritious lifestyle is an important. Some people think that vitamins are not as important as all of the other nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and protein, but vitamins are a critical part of our nutritious lifestyle. Vitamins help aid us in ways that we do not always notice.
Vitamins are different than the other nutrients like fat and proteins. With vitamins, we don’t need as large of an amount in our system. Also, another difference is that vitamins are not used as an energy source, like fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Vitamins often work together to get their jobs done, so having a deficiency of one can cause a profound amount of health problems. Vitamins are separated into two different categories: Fat-soluble vitamins, and water soluble vitamins. The difference between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins are the way our body absorb, transport, and store the vitamins. When the body takes in fat-soluble vitamins it is capable to take in an excessive amount. The body it will store the excess vitamins for a later use. Water-soluble vitamins do the opposite, if the body takes too many of them in the body will reject them, and urinate the excess amount out. (Paul Insel, 2013)
The fat-soluble vitamins are classified as: Vitamin A, D, E, and K. Each of these vitamins have a different purpose for our bodies. (Paul Insel, 2013)
Vitamin A’s best known effects are in the eyes. Vitamin A helps adjust your eyes when walking into a dark or lightly light room. Vitamin A helps in the growth, development, and division of cells. It is also a big part of bone production and the continued growth of bones. Vitamin A takes a big part in proper growth, and development in the body. Some food sources of vitamin A are deep-yellow vegetables, and dark leafy vegetables. Spinach, broccoli, lettuce, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, mangos, and even milk. Liver is actually the riches source of vitamin A, because liver stores the most of amount of vitamin A in the body. Eating any kind of animal liver can help supplement you with a good source of vitamin A! Although vitamin A deficiency is rare in North America, it is the leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. Having too much vitamin A when a women is pregnant can be dangerous. Too much vitamin A can cause birth defects, including cleft palate, heart abnormalities and brain malfunction. (Paul Insel, 2013)
Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because when the rays of the sun hit the skin they convert cholesterol to vitamin D. Vitamin D is also an essential part of bone development and growth, it helps prevent bone loss, and fractures. Vitamin D also protects us from cancers, and other chronic diseases. Vitamin D is currently under investigation in prevention of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Sources of vitamin D would be: exposure to the sunlight, cod liver oil, Sardines canned with the bones, fortified milk, and fortified cereals. As you can see there are not as many sources of vitamin D, so it is vital that you spend an adequate time in the sun when it is at its peak time during the day. Vitamin D deficiency damages bone, making them soft and weak. Babies with vitamin D deficiency acquire a condition called “rickets”. Rickets make the legs bend and bow under their weight as the child start to walk. In the United States and Canada nutritional rickets was eliminated by fortifying milk and infant vitamin supplements with vitamin D. (Paul Insel, 2013)
Vitamin E is stored in 90% of the body fat, unlike vitamin A, and D, they are primarily stored in the liver. Vitamin E is our body’s major fat-soluble antioxidant. Which means it protects polyunsaturated lipids in cell membranes, in the blood. Some studies have shown that maybe high intakes of antioxidants like vitamin E can lower the risk of chronic diseases, especially heart disease. It is also recommend to not take Vitamin E supplements in excess amounts, it is best to get your vitamin E from natural sources. Some natural sources would be sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, soybean oil, tomato paste, and spinach. Vitamin E deficiency is rare in humans, in adults is takes 5 to 10 years of deficiency before symptoms emerge. Vitamin E deficiency occurs mostly in people with fat malabsorption, or rare genetic disorders. (Paul Insel, 2013)
Vitamin K is known as the vitamin that is helpful in clotting the blood. Without vitamin K you would bleed to death by one single cut. Vitamin K is stored in the liver, and unlike other fat-soluble vitamins the liver breaks down vitamin K, and eliminates it. Making the stored up supply deplete rapidly. Some great sources of vitamin K are plan foods. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and turnip greens. Certain plant oils, margarine, spreads, and salad dressings are other important sources of vitamin K. Vitamin K deficiency is also rare. However, newborn babies have a lack of vitamin K-producing intestinal bacteria, so they are at a higher risk for vitamin K deficiency. (Paul Insel, 2013)
It is important to know that when consuming vitamins to not over dose on vitamin supplements, this could be dangerous, and toxic for the body. Never worry about overdosing on vitamins that come from foods or natural sources, these are not dangerous, or toxic. (Paul Insel, 2013)
Vitamins are an essential part of nutrition, they may not be the biggest and most marketed nutrient out there but they are still important. They help us in all sorts of way that we may take for granted. Vitamins are our friends.

Health and fitness can be fun!
Fitness and working out can be tough to fit into daily schedules, but it is a crucial part of life to stay fit and healthy. Fitness and working out can come in many different ways. Some people plan out their workouts and do them every day at a specific time. Others are in sports, or have a hobby that help them have physical activity. Any of these ways of working out is great! There are some key things to know about working out before you start. First, the importance of cardio in workouts, second strength/weight lifting workouts, and third yoga workouts. Knowing that everyone likes different workouts these three points will help show how to have a well-rounded workout plan.
Cardio is a workout that makes the heart rate go up, and keeps it up for a significant amount of time. Cardio workouts are considered one of the most effective ways to lose weight (Remedios, 2013). When new to cardio workouts, it is good to plan the workout to last about 20 minutes. After getting comfortable with that amount of time, try working out for longer. Set new goals. Cardio workouts should not be super intense, just enough to keep the heart rate up and consistent for 20-30 minutes. Some simple cardio workouts would include: walking, running, biking, swimming, and aerobic workouts. All of these workouts will keep the heart rate up for an extended period of time, and help maintain, or lose weight.
Swimming cardio can be very effective and fun. Swimming at a moderate pace either freestyle, butterfly, or breast stroke for 30 minutes can burn up to 350 calories! Swimming can be very beneficial because it is not as hard on joints. Unlike running where the repetitive motion constantly pounds on your joints.
Jogging is also a great cardio workout, it works every part of the body and helps build up lung strength.
Tennis is a fun way to incorporate cardio into a workout, tennis helps with speed, strength, and reaction time.
Another fun way to incorporate cardio in the workout is to participate in Zumba. Zumba can be compared to a dance class. It is a really fun way to work out!
Kickboxing is an intense kind of cardio workout. Not only does kickboxing work the entire body, it really strengthens the core muscles of the body. Compared to walking or running, kickboxing has participants moving different ways constantly throughout the workout!

Strength/weightlifting workouts can be very effective. Weightlifting burns fat, reduces risk of diabetes, prevents back pain, and even helps fight depression. Research findings show that not only does weightlifting tone the body and improve body composition, it can also improve overall health, and elevate moods (Blackie, 2013). Weight training can help prevent osteoporosis, build up your muscles to prevent injury, and tone up your body. It is important when weight training that the right amount of time is spent. We don’t want to weight train every day. It is important to have a healthy balance. The goal should be to incorporate 2-3 weightlifting workouts per week. In each of these workouts try to target different areas of the body. For example; Monday’s workout could be the upper half of the body, and on Wednesday the lower half. It’s also important to talk about the difference between males and females when it comes to weightlifting. Women get concerned that when they weight train, they will end up looking like the next Arnold Schwarzenegger! This is not the case, women don’t have enough testosterone in their body to produce huge muscle mass. Women also produce muscle at half the rate men do. Weightlifting is different than cardio, weight training is more intense and centered more towards building up the muscles and gaining strength. When weight training, it is more likely that there will be more muscle mass built. Thus making people gain weight instead of lose weight. This is a good thing! Muscle takes up less space than fat, and people will look lean and toned. It’s not all about how much someone weighs, it’s about how healthy that person is, and how comfortable they are their own body.
Yoga, when first thinking about “yoga” there’s always the thought in the back of the mind that it is some spiritual meditation, and some want no part of it. But yoga can be a very soothing, and relaxing exercise without practicing the spiritual mediation part. Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility and being more flexible makes it easier to move, people are less stiff, and less tired. In one study 35% of people who have participated in yoga for eight weeks increased their flexibility (S.Juhasz, 2014). There are a lot of different kinds of yoga, there is yoga that helps with strength and endurance. Yoga that helps build better posture. Yoga can also help breathing, this can regulate stress levels, making someone feel calmer. Yoga is also beneficial because it helps maintain the balance of the metabolism. One of the best things about yoga is that anyone can do it! There are different variations of poses for beginners or for those more advanced. So it’s always easy to start!
Hopefully this article has helped bring to light some of the workouts that can benefit people’s lives. Contributing motivation to get up and plan a workout and live a happy and healthy lifestyle!

Have you ever struggled with not knowing what kind of clothes looks best on you? That feeling of going shopping with your friends, and not being able to find an outfit that draws out your best features? All of us have had this struggle. Four main body types will give you a guide on what looks best on you! Even though there is not a universal definition for body shapes there is terminology that can help you determine which category your body type falls into. We’ll look at the rectangle/banana shape, then the hourglass shape, pear shape, and apple shape
First, rectangle/banana shape is one of the most common shapes in women. This shape is the easiest shape to dress as well. Rectangle shapes tend to be pretty slim, their shoulders, hips, and waist, are almost the same size. If you are a rectangle shape you are more likely to gain weight in the stomach region. If you are a rectangle shape it is wise to draw attention to the areas on your body that you like. So you if you have a pretty face you would try to wear clothing that have a great neckline, or color that compliments your complexion. Like we said before, banana figures tend to gain weight in their mid-section. One thing you can do to hide this is to wear an open jacket or sweater. This will make your waist look narrower, and thus giving you more shape. A good first step to your wardrobe is to invest in good undergarments. Make sure your bra gives you lots of support, which will make your waist look more defined. Secondly wear shirts that end at the midsection of the hips, this will give the illusion of a smaller waist. Try not to wear tops that are too tight. Semi-fitted clothing is the best, tops that are too tight make the body look straighter, and gives less definition. Draw attention to the upper half of the body. Pleats, ruffles and bows will add detail, and draw attention to your breasts and shoulders which can take away the attention from the waist. Avoid all detail around the waist, like pockets, patterns, and horizontal strips. These features will less define your waist. One of my personal favorites for rectangular body shapes is the peplum tops and dresses. This top can be very flattering. It makes the waistline look smaller and highlights your hips giving more of a curvy appeal. When looking for dresses you can always go the safe route and buy empire waist dresses. These have always worked for me. They are both comfy and classy. When it comes to pants or jeans rectangle/banana shapes can wear any style. If you have a shorter waist it is best to wear mid to low rise pants. When you have a longer waist its best to wear high waisted pants. Same for skirts, you can wear short skirts, long skirts, pencil skirts, anything that you like, this is one of the blessings of having a rectangle/banana shape. (What’s Your Shape-Body Shape?)
Hourglass figures have a well proportionate upper body, and lower body. Their shoulders and hips are almost the same size. Hourglass figures tend to gain weight all over their body especially in their hips and chest. The hourglass shape is considered to be the most feminine body figure, and the most sought after body shape by women, but it can also be one of the hardest figures to dress. The key to dressing this body shape is to enhance the small waist, and show off curves. Since hourglass shapes have fuller breasts it is crucial that you get fitted for the correct size bra. Also wearing the correct neckline will help enhance curves. Stay away from turtlenecks, this will just make breasts look saggy. The perfect neckline is the V-shaped. It looks sophisticated and accentuates curves. All tops and jackets should reach below the hips and fitted tops are great to wear. Loose tops are also great if paired with a stylish belt! Skirts and dresses can be very flattering on this shape, just make sure that the dress is fitted at the waist otherwise hourglass figures can appear bigger than they really are. Wrap dresses and skirts look the best on this body shape. Also high waisted skirts or dresses can be very flattering and can accentuate curves. Hourglass figures look great in pants, but have trouble finding the right size. When choosing pants go for wide-legged and loose fitted that go straight to the floor. Stay away from belts on the hips, and big flashy pockets. If the hips or thighs are bigger, try to wear darker colored pants, which creates a slimmer illusion. (Reed, Stephanie)
Pear shaped figures have a larger lower body and a smaller upper body. The shoulders are narrower than the hips, this figure tends to gain more weight below the waist. When choosing a top, go for bright colors and patterns. Choose shirts that end right before the hips, this will draw attention to the tiny upper half of the body, and letting the lower half appear to be more narrow. For pants, the best style is plain flare jeans, or dark boot cut jeans. Avoid big pockets and designs on your butt and thighs. This will draw to much attention to areas that aren’t as flattering. When shopping for a dress, empire waist will always look great on this body type. Pencil skirts and miniskirts should be avoided due to making the pear shape individual look heavier. (Jedinak, Michaela)
Apple shaped figures have wider shoulders than hips, making them bigger on the top half of their body, and smaller on the bottom half. This body shape tends to gain weight above the waist, so apple shapes have larger breasts and midsections. When dressing an apple shape always try to take the attention away from the midsection, since this is where apple shapes will tend to gain weight. When choosing a top to wear, try a shirt that will emphasize your breasts. This will take attention away from the midsection, and show off the best features. V-necks, plunging necklines, scoop, and strapless shirts will help elongate the upper body, making one appear taller, and slimmer. Apple shapes shirts shouldn’t be too tight, baggy or have a boxy effect. Shirts should fall lower than your hip bones. Add a tie at the waist of a shirt or dress to add definition. There is a variety of dresses that can flatter the apple shape. A-line dresses are probably going to be the first choice because they draw attention away from the midsection. Dresses that are all one consistent color also help draw attention away from the midsection. Also wearing an open jacket that is nipped at the waist will add a great touch to any dress. Draw attention to your legs by wearing pants that have pockets in the back. This will create definition for your flatter bottom, and will balance out the waist. Wear pants that are denim, trouser cut, flared, or boot cut. Don’t downplay the legs by wearing too tight of fabrics. (What Your Shape-Body Shape?)

Hi, everyone! My name is Elizabeth and my passion is to show girls that they are beautiful! I want girls to be able to read something fun, and interesting, and still get a lot of helpful information about health and beauty. When I was young I never had an older sister to help me with beauty tips, or to encourage me that I was beautiful. I was longing for some encouragement, some teaching, and guidance in all of these areas.

My hope for this magazine is that young girls see that they are beautiful, and they can use my tips and articles as tools to help them feel beautiful. I want them to see that they are strong, and they can be healthy. I also want young girls to know that beauty does not just come from the outside, it also comes from the inside. I want to boost young girl’s confidence, they don’t have to be a size two to be beautiful. It takes so much more to be beautiful then just your size, or how you look.

I know that when I was a young girl I loved reading magazines that shared articles about what girls can do to live a healthy, and beautiful life. My hope for this magazine is that young girls can gain insight on how to live a healthy lifestyle, and how to be confident in the beauty that they already possess.
