C'Mon Hornets...

Posted | Views: 1,147
Will we ever seen the NBA team in Charlotte get over the hump? I mean, seriously! I know I may be asking a somewhat far-fetched question, since the Hornets aren't supposed to contend for a title or anything, but when will they be expected to win games as opposed to just brushing off every loss? Everytime it's: "oh, it's Charlotte, they're not supposed to be that good." Well when I take a gander at the team's roster, THEY SHOULD BE GOOD! It's time to forget the excuses, lace up the Jordans (because we know everyone on the team has them, MJ's the owner for crying out loud) and starting winning the games they're supposed to.
The reason for my sudden panic: the Hornets handed the Lakers their first win of the season last night when LA won 107-92. Not only did the Hornets lose to what could be the worst team in basketball, but they let "Linsanity" shred them to pieces scoring 21 points. The Hornets are sitting at 3-4 at this juncture of the season, which truly isn't bad, but all three of their wins have come at home while three of their four losses are on the road. To make matters worse they play on the road again tonight (Monday) against the Trailblazers.
The Hornets rank only 21st in the NBA in points per game, and part of that problem has been the lack of scoring punch from newcomer Lance Stephenson. Charlotte was really hoping Stephenson would light up the scoreboard, but so far this season he's only averaged eight points per game. He did however have a game winning three-pointer in the Hornet's win against Charlotte, but everyone who's seen the highlight knows that it was a lucky bank-shot that sealed the deal. That brings me to my other point: two of the Hornets three wins have come off of game winning shots. Kemba Walker had to make a clutch Jumper to seal a comeback victory against Milwaukee opening night. They could just as easily be 1-6 through seven games this season.
The Hornets have a roster filled with talent, therefore these starts should almost be inexcusable. They have all-star Al Jefferson, who truly can't be blamed for the team's struggles at all. He's averaging 23 points and seven rebounds this season. Then of course there's Stephenson, and Walker, both of whom should be shouldering more of the offensive load. Walker is averaging almost 16 points per game but only gets about five assists per night. He will need to find a way to get his teammates more involved if this Hornets team wants its offensive numbers to go up. Also, if you would've told me that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist would be averaging more points than Stephenson seven games in I would've told you to stop taking so many crazy pills.
Luckily for the Hornets, the season is still extremely young. I'm not over-reacting with my post, I'm just wondering when this team will take that next step. In my preseason rankings I gave them some love so now they need to prove they're a team to be noticed in the East. The, "there's always next year," excuse is only going to work for so long in Charlotte before people start to demand more, because right now they should already be expecting it. -BC

Lake Conference Championships
On October 9th one of the biggest races of the season took place, The Lake Conference Championships at Gale Woods Farm. The Lake Conference has five members: Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Wayzata. Going into the boys race, Wayzata was ranked number one, Edina second, Hopkins fourth, Eden Prairie sixth, and Minnetonka unranked (Class AA Boys XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014.) Talk about a small, but very competitive conference. The 2014 Lake Conference champion was the number one team in the state, Wayzata, aided by a first place finish from Connor Olson with a time of 15:09.80. They won the team title with a score of thirty. Hopkins was second with forty points (Lake Conference Championships- Varsity Boys.)

On the girls side Wayzata was ranked number two, Edina third, Minnetonka fourth, Eden Prairie sixth, and Hopkins unranked (Class AA Girls XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014.) The girls’ race would be a nail biter between three teams. Edina won the team championship with a score of forty-six points. Minnetonka and Wayzata finished second and third with scores of forty-eight and fifty-three respectably. Eden Prairie finished fourth and Hopkins finished sixth. Anna French of Wayzata won the Lake Conference individual championship with a time of 14:08.70 over teammates Annika Lerdall and Micheala Keller-Miller (Lake Conference Championships- Varsity Girls.)

Lake Conference Cross Country Season
Wow, what a season of cross country! 2014 has been another great year of cross country teams in the Lake Conference. Many people have ran personal best times and many teams have experienced all-time highs. From the beginning, this season looked like it would be a fast one. A lot of runners are returning from outstanding cross country and track seasons last year. Next week the season will conclude at the state cross country meet at Saint Olaf College in Northfield. It is setting up to be a great finish to the 2014 season.
Preseason
Going into 2014 it looked like Wayzata had the potential to sweep both the boys and girls Class AA State Championships this year. The boys entered the season the preseason number one ranked team (Class AA Boys XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014), while the girls’ team was number two in the preseason behind Willmar (Class AA Girls XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014.) They also had four individual runners ranked in the preseason poll. Connor Olson of Wayzata started the boy’s season ranked number one ahead of Joe Klecker of Hopkins, Micah Mather of Highland Park and teammates Ian Eklin and Jaret Carpenter (Class AA Boys XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014.) For the girls’ team senior Anna French started the season ranked in the number six position. It was no doubt going into the season Wayzata had the potential to sweep both the boys and girls state championships this fall (Class AA Girls XC Coach’s Rankings for October 20, 2014.)

Another tip that we thought was great is balance out your volume! Scarves are so in right now. Anyone can make the scarves look great with a fitted jacket and skinny jeans. You can actually put a scarf with anything. Some other suggestions from us would be with a vest, long sleeves, jean jackets, cardigans, and even a sweatshirt would look great with a scarf! All you are missing is that messy looking hair that all guys love and you are set!

Cooking Classes

Posted | Views: 673
The cooking classes we offer are not to learn fancy techniques; it is about learning how to put a complete meal together, inspiring, combining flavors, herbs, and learning how to eat healthy. Healthy cooking doesn’t mean that you have to become a gourmet chef or invest in expensive cookware. You can use basic cooking techniques to prepare food in healthy ways.  In addition to the cooking classes, you’ll learn “Herbs 101”. Fresh herbs can alter and enhance the flavor of any dish. To chefs, they’re basic ingredients. To novices, they’re intimidating. It can be tough to identify herbs and even more difficult to know how to us them.  Using healthy cooking techniques, you can cut fat and calories. Consider, for instance, that each tablespoon (about 14g) of oil you use when frying adds 14 grams of fat and more than 100 calories. To put it in perspective – a healthy adult eating a 1,800 calorie diet should have no more than about 70 grams of fat a day. By switching to roasting, you not only eliminate added oil but also allow any fat in the food to drip away.  Just as important as eating healthy is to study your food labels. Food and ingredient decisions are more difficult than ever. In our cooking class you’ll learn how food companies often misrepresent or mislead us into buying products with little or no nutritional value. The food label is where you go for the real information. Use it to compare products and discover what they truly contain so you can make healthier choices.  Learning how to have a well-stocked kitchen is all part of the process. When you don’t have the right ingredients in the house, it’s hard to eat well. In our cooking class you’ll learn how to keep a well stocked pantry, fridge, condiments, and freezer. All of this gives you options to pull together a variety of delicious and wholesome meals in a pinch.

Physics of cyclism

Posted | Views: 1,674
When bicycles were first invented, they had a large front wheel with a large radius. This made them extremely efficient and fast to ride on flat spaces, but unfortunately they were quite unstable and therefore very dangerous to the rider. The center of mass was very high and the bike overturned easily.
Champion Tour de France cyclist Lance Armstrong, like many top cyclists, use technology to improve performance. Lance used a specially designed helmet for time trials. This is an event where maximum efficiency and speed is required. The helmet design helped to shave vital seconds of his time. The helmet minimizes friction by allowing air to flow over his head and down his back. An ordinary helmet would cause turbulent wind flow at his neck and create drag. He also wore specialized clothing to decrease drag.

Hitting a Baseball

How hard is to hit a baseball?
Hitting a baseball during a game of America's favorite summer past-time is not an easy mission. Some players are good at it right of the bat, but even those great hitters only get to hit safely three times out of ten and also fail to put the ball in play two times out of that same ten opportunities.
According to Ted Williams, arguably the greatest baseball hitter of all-time hitting a baseball is no easy task. When asked about the difficulty of hitting safely Williams stated that " I think without question the hardest single thing to do in sport is to hit a baseball.”
This comes from one of the most successful hitters not only of his time, but in the history of the game, and he still considers hitting the hardest thing to do in sports. Taking this into account, and the information stated previously, it just generates one simple, basic and obvious question: What makes hitting so difficult? And the answer to this question is simple, the answer is timing.
According to Robert Adair, a Yale physicist who has studied the science of baseball, a batter takes 100 milliseconds for the eye of the batter to see the ball, 25 milliseconds to identify the speed and location of the pitch, 25 milliseconds to decide whether to swing or let the ball go by, another 25 millimeters to decide to swing high or low, inside or outside, 15 millimeters to start and finish the swing, as a result, the batter must hit the ball within an eight of an inch of dead center and at precisely the exact millimeter. In conclusion, it is pretty hard to hit a baseball, but with the correct timing you may find yourself in the MLB.

The physics of running

Add some text,
Knowledge about the physics of running is of particular interest to high-level athletes who strive to optimize their performance, using a combination of expert coaching and state-of-the-art training facilities. To most people, the physics behind running is hardly given a second thought. But when medals, such as Olympic medals, are on the line then such thoughts become commonplace and turn into active areas of research.
When running, you need to have in mind:
Force generated during running.
Path traveled by runner's center of mass.
Arm swinging.
Effect of race curve on running times.
Effect on track material on running times.

Turkeys Have Legs?

Posted | Views: 523
I know it sounds like a dumb question but you won't know until you ask. If you never question society (in this case my mother) then you will just accept things as they are. I never gave it second thought that turkeys had legs you see from the time that I could remember my mother always presented a turkey that didn't include legs. I never thought much about it because when we had turkey any other time of the year it would be the wings so legs never really played a major role. So can you imagine my "ahh-ha" moment when I woke up early one Thanksgiving morning to find that my father would steal the legs off of the turkey retreat to his bedroom and eat the legs. For some of you this maybe a cute little story but this was a realization to me. Turkeys actually did have legs and my father literally walked off with them every Thanksgiving.
Don't you agree some of our fondest moments and greatest lessons in life are food centered.
The answer to many of life's mystery's can be realized if you wake up early enough.
