1. Update and Optimize your Website

• Include content such as videos, photos, Facebook, Twitter & YouTube links.  
• Look "under the hood" at the coding for your site. Is your website missing keywords, business description, links, metatags and other vital information for indexing and ranking on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines?
• Is your website optimized for mobile phones?  If not, you are missing out on 51% of potential business. That's the percentage of website visitors who are more likely to do business with a company that has a mobile website.

2. Claim your Google Places Listing

• Go to http://Google.ca/places and you will see a sign-in / sign-up screen

• Businesses that have claimed their listing can log in with their Email and Password

• If you want to Claim / Add a listing simply click on the Sign Up Now link and complete the required information to Create an Account and click I Accept
• Maximize your Google power by clicking this link. Very few local businesses have taken full advantage of this!
  

3. Claim your Local online directory listings.

• The top two local online directories are YellowPages.ca and Canpages.ca.  Visit their home pages and sign up for a free listing if you dont't already have one.  YellowPages.ca

• Canpages.ca link and enter your business phone number. 

• If you have already claimed your listing, log in with your User ID and Password
• If you are claiming a listing for the first time, enter your 10-digit business phone number and click on your business listing
• You are automatically put into the claiming your listing process, there are 4 steps to complete, press continue to move to the next step
• The final step will require entering a PIN number supplied by a Canpages.ca automated attendant. You contacted by phone at the number on your Canpages.ca business listing

4. Get Reviews on Canpages.ca via GigPark

• Go to the Reviews tab on your Canpages.ca Detail Page

• Click on the Is this your business? link
• Copy the Canpages review link into an email of your own OR simply click send email
• Enter the email addresses of friends, family and customers you want to send the email / request to and click “send.”

5. Social Networking on Canpages.ca

• Go to your business listing on Canpages.ca

• Click on one of the Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz or Tell a Friend links
• Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz users must log in with your Email and Password
• Elect to share your business listing and post a comment … it’s that easy!
• Tell a Friend is an option that allows you to email your business listing to a friend, you do not need to log in for this

Good online marketing is all about Return on Investment.   A website that looks beautiful quickly loses value unless it becomes an online tool to generate business. 

Similarly, a Google marketing campaign loses value if it is not properly managed by experienced experts.  Do-it-yourself online marketing can come at the high cost of taking you away from what you do best: managing your business.

The purpose of all marketing is to drive traffic to your business.  Whether or not new business comes through your website, the important thing is that it finds you. My job at is to help make sure it does.

Know your demographic.  Typically, most business' customers are in the transitional period.  That is, they use both online and print directories when searching for a local product or service.

January Jones: Because after you called me to say that you appreciated my work in the first season of Mad Men, you said that I shouldn’t do too many interviews because the show is going to get bigger. So I thought it was ironic that you agreed to do this one.

Nicholson: You said on the phone that you wanted me to do it because you thought I would be curious about the same thing as the average person—and that I wouldn’t ask you who you were dating.

Jones: Yeah.

Nicholson: But that’s what people want to know.

Jones: I guess.

Nicholson: So is your name January because you were born then?

Jones: It’s a coincidence. It’s from a book called Once is Not Enough by Jacqueline Susann. Bad book.
