SEVER'S Mural "The Death of Street Art"

DEATH OF STREET ART?

A new mural in Hamtramck claims street art has gone mainstream, and it's causing enough controversy to show public opinion on graffiti remains divided.

The maker of the provocative piece is SEVER, an Atlanta-based graffiti artist who has a day job as a professional muralist. He's one of a cadre "writers" participating in the Detroit Beautification Project, which brought in graffiti artists from around the world to paint murals all over town.

But while SEVER's loaded, tongue-in-cheek "Death of Street Art" piece at Joseph Campau and Goodson St. -- featuring a coffin labeled "Street Art" carried by cartoon-like characters riffing on notable artists -- received accolades from graffiti fans, it rubbed several local residents the wrong way.

No Texting While Walking in Fort Lee, NJ

Texting While Walking?

now lands you a ticket in Fort Lee, NJ.

Text addicts beware — a New Jersey town is mounting a crackdown on texting while walking.

Police in Fort Lee, N.J., have issued more than 117 jaywalking tickets in the last month and a half, and cops say texting pedestrians are some of the biggest offenders, according to Philadelphia TV station WTXF.

“It’s a big distraction. Pedestrians aren’t watching where they’re going. They’re not aware,” police chief Thomas Ripoli told WTXF.

Ripoli said 20 people have been hit by cars so far this year in the Bergen County town — many because they were too absorbed texting or talking on their phones to keep track of traffic around them.

Fort Lee police started by handing out pamphlets warning against “dangerous” walking during a two-week grace period, then started whacking offenders with $85 fines.

“Even kids,” Ripoli told The Record. “We just hope their parents would make them pay the fine. ”

Is this unconstitutional or what? Doesn’t Fort Lee have better things to do then keep taking more rights away from people? What next? Can’t talk while walking? Can’t drink soda in the drivers seat?

Not So "Sunshine"

McDonald's and TBWA have disavowed any involvement in a short film chronicling a jaded adman's experiences making commercials in China.

"Sunshine" follows American freelance producer John Benet as he works for TBWA on a McDonald's campaign in China. The film was directed by Doug Nichol of Partizan, who was also the director of the ad campaign. It has left the industry buzzing for its nuanced and insightful portrayal of the advertising profession. At one point, Mr. Benet voices frustrations common to the industry, wondering aloud whether he's squandering his creative talents on crass commercialism. At another, he discusses the luxuries, travel and unique experiences afforded by the job.

But the15-minute film is seen through the lens of China, which has a fast-growing, yet immature, advertising industry not known for groundbreaking work. The film shows the creative process, warts and all, including scenes where Mr. Benet is told his preferred actors are not "sunshine" enough and where he speaks with disdain about the creative views of the client -- McDonald's. He also wonders aloud if advertising is corrupting Chinese culture.

"When we travel we want to experience something different. It just feels the same," Mr. Benet says during shots of commercial areas in Shanghai. "It's my job to sell that sameness."

Intro to Spilled Milk

Spilled Milk {tales of your everyday anachronism}

Welcome!

My name is Hannah and I am the creator of Spilled Milk. For a long time, I've wanted to do something with my life. But I never knew exactly what. I love politics, I love music, I love art, I love writing, and I just couldn't figure out a way to make it all fit together in one conglomerate whole. But that changed last night when  I was sent an email from my wonderful Aunt Joanna.

It was a TED presentation given by 15-year-old Tavi Gevinson who runs not only The Style Rookie, but Rookie Mag. It got me thinking. I want to create something that people can be a part of and take safety in. So here I go.

Now, a little bit of an explanation. Why is it called Spilled Milk? Well, it's all because of this guy, to the right.

His name is Harvey Milk. On January 8, 1978 he was sworn in as California's first openly gay man to be elected into a public office. He served as an inspiration to countless people, giving them hope for the future and pride in who they are. Sadly, his life was taken by Dan White on November 27 of that same year.

Though Harvey Milk's time in office was short, he will live on in our hearts forever. He taught us that no matter what, we stand up for what is right despite the circumstances. After all, there is no use crying over spilled milk.

So glad you're here,

Hannah

His passion is spilling onto our generation. His hope is becoming our hope.

Heart Felt Message from Mike D

I know, we should have tweeted and instagrammed every sad, happy and inspired thought, smile or tear by now. But honestly the last few days have just been a blur of deep emotions for our closest friend, band mate and really brother. I miss Adam so much. He really served as a great example for myself and so many of what determination, faith, focus, and humility coupled with a sense of humor can accomplish. The world is in need of many more like him. We love you Adam.

The Truth About Music

Posted | Views: 17,770

Music sets everyone free. Everyone loves music. At least everyone that falls in love. If someone hates music...the moment they meet someone they are crazy about, whatever song is playing at the first place they meet, that person will love music after that moment. True story...

The Course Report

April 30th - Nidom - The longest round of golf in the world - ever!

Sato Akira san from the Kutchan driving range had a competition to celebrate his hole in one at Lake Toya Hills last season. As he was insured, he was able to spend up to onemillion yen on comps, goodies and much more. we started at 1030 but actually did not finish until 7pm! Very busyt on the course. Frustration all round but not bad scores.

Nidom classic is made up of Ashiri, Nisupa, Pirika and is one of the obvious box tickers for people visiting Hokkaido to golf. Worth a visit if you have not been but plenty of better value experiences on the island.

May 1st at Niseko Golf Course.

Two groups with Ben once again taking the money despite some questionable scoring on the first after he forgot his putter on the practice green..

Course in good condition but greens especially good for this time of year.

THE SUGR AND SPICE BAND

Posted | Views: 1,370

THE SUGAR AND SPICE BAND

The Sugar and Spice band is an incredible Motown and disco band with a tremendous
amount of soul.  The band is compiled of
ten phenomenally talented artists and musicians from around Long Island.  Each
member has a story to tell and a history with music from Gladys Knight to Little
Buster. The band has an unbelievable song list which includes a range of
melodies. “You Can’t Hurry Love, “Le freak”, “Band of Gold” and” Chain of Fools”
are just a few of the numerous songs they perform. This band gets the crowds
singing, and on the floor dancing from the minute that first melody is heard.

Joyce Kendrick, the manager and lead vocalist, is a Brooklyn
criminal defense attorney by day and a well known singer by night. Joyce comes
from a very talented family. Her mother sang with a famous gospel group, and her
uncle sings with and produces Dorothy Norwood. Joyce was inspired as a youngster
by Diana Ross. During college she toured with the Eastern Arizona Repertory Theatre Company for two years.
She has performed in various musicals. One year, uring a summer break from school, she
flew to New York for a vacation. Little did Joyce know she was going to meet her husband Darryl
Kendrick and fall in love. Joyce followed her heart and relocated to Long
Island, where she finished her law degree .Her husband  Darryl has been playing saxophone since the
age of 10 and has performed in several bands including Love, Peace and Joy,
Nemesis, and New Life Soul. They sang together with New Life Soul for about 5
years. A few years back, Darryl decided to start his own band, introduced Joyce
to a few musicians, and before they knew it, The Sugar and Spice band was
formed.

When asked how all the members came together, Joyce stated, “It was sort of faith. In the
beginning, the original drummer, saxophone and trumpet player from the previous
band came with us on our new venture. The drummer met a keyboard player, who had
joined the band, but eventually had to leave the band. That was when Roast beef
Joe contacted us to join the group. When our drummer left, Tommy Randano, who
played with Gladys Knight, joined the group as the drummer.” The Sugar and Spice
Band have been together for 1.5 years. They practice weekly at Jamhouse Studios
in Lindenhurst New York.
Each member has an astounding talent worth sharing:

Michael Carpenter, the tenor saxophonist,
has been playing the saxophone for more than 25 years. He holds a degree in
music from Berklee College of Music. Currently Michael is a band director and a
teacher atWestburyHigh School.

Rich Gordon who plays the Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Harmonica, has played for over 40 years. He has played
with several bands including New Life Soul and Randy and the Rainbows- with whom
he continues to perform.

"Roast Beef Joe" Samuels is the keyboard player. He has played with
the legendary Little Buster.

Timothy Maye, who plays the bass
guitar, has performed for over 20 years. His talent will have you up and jumping
the entire evening.

Joey Donato plays the guitar
and vocals. “He has been playing guitar by the age of 13.  By 15, he was
studying with Con Estone and later the legendary, late great Carmen Mastren.
After a tour of military duty and before joining The Royal Teens, (Short
Shorts), Joey resumed his playing experience by providing the guitar background
for acts such as The Belmonts and later Gary US Bonds and the Paragons.”

Tommy Rendano plays the drums “.He holds a degree in Instrumental Performance and
Music Education from Berklee College of Music and a degree in Music Education
from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. For over five years, Tommy performed in Las Vegas
showroom house orchestras at the MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, Aladdin & Tropicana Hotels. He played
behind top showroom headliners including Gladys Knight, Marilyn McCoo and Billy
Davis Jr., Lola Falana, Dionne Warwick, Wayne Newton, Glen Campbell, Doc
Serinson, Paul Williams, Bernadette Peters and many others.  He spent ten years
in New York as a personal drummer for the Holidays and Cathy Jean and the Roomates. Serving as House
drummer for the Cavalier Lounge he played for oldies groups the Angels &
Lenny Welch. “

Sheryl Myles is one of the background vocalists. She is the choir director for her church
choir and is very skilled at perfecting harmonies.

Stephanie Ghulson is another background vocalist. Stephanie also has gained her singing experience
while growing up in the church. Together these woman will bring tears to your eyes as they reproduce
the oldies in a way never heard before.

The Sugar and Spice
Band can be seen all over Long Island. They recently played at The Resorts World Casino New York City Aqueduct.
They played at Old Westbury College for the Jazz under the Stars. You can find them at The Lizard Lounge,
The High Note, and numerous venues From Queens to the Hamptons. They plan on coming up with new videos
and a new demo this year.

As far as the family genes spreading, Darryl and Joyce’s daughter Jazmine won the 2004 LI Idol in her
school for her wonderful singing abilities. She also made the final cuts for
Christina Aguilera’s show, “The Voice”.  Their son Vernell is a 27 year old music video productions artist.
