The Things You Don't Know

The Things You Don't Know

There are an infinite number of things that people don't know. You can't know everything. It's impossible. But there are some things in the world that you should know, but you don't ever hear of. I've found that Americans have a very distant view of the world, as if it's struggles and tragedies were just stories that you heard on the nightly news- not real people, not real places, not real lives. I have fought myself lost in this mindset many times.

I became involved with bringing these stories to you, reader, when I was nine years old, but I didn't know it yet. My parents adopted two girls from Ethiopia, Africa seven years ago. I got to travel with them and my older brothers halfway across the Earth to finalize the adoption, and I experienced an entirely different world than my rural life in Minnesota. I heard the loud rumble of monks singing praises in the early morning hours in their monasteries, and I witnessed kids my age playing soccer with an orange peel as a ball. I saw homes made of giant leaves, sticks, and scraps of metal, and I saw children -including my sisters- fill the adoption care center. Poverty surrounded the people there. IT was shoved in their faces from the time they woke up in the dark of the morning to when they laid to sleep late that night.

But what triumphed over the poverty, the sadness, and the pain, was the undeniable, inextinguishable hope in everyone's eyes. Despite the life they had been given, they did not demand pity. They knew that to do so would be, in a sense, admitting defeat So the monks still sang praises in the mornings, and the children laughed as they played soccer with the orange peel. These people opened my eyes to a bigger world, on that I want to share with you- its tragedies, its triumphs, and its people- all of it.

Editor's introduction

When I was a little girl, I always had a passion for helping people.

Usually it was my twin brother or younger sister. I assumed the mother role at a young age. I'd constantly make sure they were safe and assisted them with anything they needed. Sometimes that would lead to trouble, but I had a pretty honest face to get away with things with my parents.

I was that kid that walked around with a little doctor's kit and would bandage up any 'owie.' After graduating high school, I joined the Army

and left three months later into what people referred to as "the real world." That was an experience in itself. At 18 years old, I had the privilege of knowing what I could handle physically, mentally and emotionally. It can take a person there whole life to realize and understand themselves.

Add some text, Yo! Click this text box to change the text, style, color and fonts.
I had many accomplishments and defeats there on after. My life in a nutshell consisted of this: buying my first car, having a town home in the cities, getting married, having two beautiful children, handled three deployments of my husband's, surviving a nasty divorce, hitting rock bottom at the age of 23, moved back in with my parents, getting back on my feet when I was 25, finally meeting the man of my dreams, moved three more times and graduating from school as a LPN. Wow, right? In the midst of all this, I battled severe depression and uncontrolled anxiety. I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.

I denied getting help when I desperately needed it. My mom, being a RN, begged me to go see a doctor and get on medication. My mentality of having too much pride got the best of me. I got fed up of being tired and feeling like my life was worthless. I finally reached out for help. I wouldn't be the same person I am today if I didn't. I consider myself lucky. With the help of medications and therapy, I survived one of the longest and toughest times in my life.

This magazine is about life's accomplishments, the struggles, the joys, the ups, the downs and everything in between. Medicine isn't just pills to me, it was a way to help me with a burden.
Life situations led you to where you are today. I'm happy to say that I've succeeded in my goal of helping people professionally and in a field I love. I get to be that person that helps you through tough times, regardless what it may be.
To end this on a light note, I think of this quote everyday, " Nobody said that life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it." -Harvey Mackay.

Noises On The Author...
Hunting has always been a passion of mine. It brings me a sense of relief when I am in the stand not worrying about anything else in the world. Putting on either the camo or orange, depending what I am hunting for, can take away many problems and clear my mind. I excitement of seeing a deer or dozen ducks is beyond any other feeling.
Since I have been hunting for 4 years now, I feel like I have enough knowledge and experiences to show or tell other hunters about. I defiantly do not know everything, but I am confident I can be a successful hunter. Knowledge is everything in hunting, for instance, not knowing what a deer track looks like or not knowing what noises could be a deer moving gives you a huge disadvantage in the hunting world. I feel like this magazine will help many younger hunters learn the ways.

I picked hunting as my magazine theme because there is a lot to know about hunting and a lot to teach everyone about. Problems such as poaching and animal instincts. Things out in the wildlife that you may not know what they are could really be just from an animal marking its territory on the land. I find this fascinating in many ways, and I still have a lot to learn about hunting. Hunting takes knowledge and passion. Do you have both?

Emily Dreger is a Post-Secondary Enrollment Options student at Alexandria Technical & Community College pursuing her Liberal Arts Degree. She grew up in Alexandria, Minnesota and has an older brother and a younger sister. With her dad owning a business leisure time isn’t very common in her family, so hunting and fishing is one of the few times the family takes off of work to enjoy some family bonding and relaxation time. Besides hunting and fishing, Emily likes to read, listen to music, and sew.
At two years old, Emily’s parents decided to take her fishing for the first time. Bundled up in her snow pants, coat, hat, and mittens with her little blue fishing pole, Emily and her family adventured out to the lake. Her dad is an avid angler in the winter, but in the summer, he stays very busy with his business. Emily’s dad also likes to deer hunt.
About the Author
The way Emily’s dad and brother talked about hunting made it sound fun, so Emily decided she should also try hunting. She went for the first time when she was ten years old. Emily and her dad did not see any deer, but she decided she could try again the next year when she had her hunting license and a gun. Every year since then Emily goes hunting but has not gotten a deer yet. Maybe this year will be the year she gets the trophy buck.

About the Author
This month’s issue of Fashion Diva stresses on the importance of a persons appearance and if you’re lookin’ great, then you should be feelin’ great! That’s the motto I go by at least! When I was younger I was wearing tennies, plain shirt, and jeans, just normal kids clothing. It was the same every year going to school. As I got older and older I saw changes in peoples wardrobe. Sparkle scarves, fancy shirt, and fashion jeans with bling-bling on the buts, I loved it! I thought that those girls looked good and their attitude made them seem like they were feeling good as well. So, I started changing what I was wearing. I was feeling better right when I walked in the store.

Why is fashion so important to me? What do I get out of being fashionable? Ever since I was little I looked up to my aunts, every year I got older, I saw their wardrobe differ and there closets get bigger and bigger. They always went shopping with me, always helped me find the best of the best clothing. They are my idols! I have a cousin that was the age that I was when I was watching my aunts, she is watching me now. Now I know the feeling of someone looking up to me and it feels great to have someone looking up to me, it makes me feel good! It makes me feel as good as my clothes make me feel! Amazing and Confident.

My point I’m trying to get across is that looking good, finding the wardrobe that is you, it's an amazing feeling! It’s not about “fitting in” or getting people to like you because of what you have or what you look like! I’m 17 years old now, and fashion is my life; it makes me. That is why I write these magazines, I want every one of you to feel as good or even better than I do when wearing clothes!

10 reasons to date a woman who is nearly half of your age

Posted | Views: 759
When it comes to dating, the idea of an extreme disparity between the respective ages of the prospective couple is an issue that always raises eyebrows. But as with many other great things in life, one often has to ignore the critical nature of the society and venture forward in doing what one believes is right.
This is never truer than when it comes to an older man dating a woman half his age. There are many men out there who repress their desire to establish a relationship with a younger woman solely out of the fear of being ridiculed as a ‘sugar daddy’. So we’ve formed a list of ten compelling reasons that are bound to encourage the aforementioned hesitant men to let out their inner Bruce Willis, and set out on their quest to find their Emma Heming. Here we go:

1. You are not her ‘sugar daddy’: Don’t let anyone discourage you from dating a younger woman by labeling you as a mere financial provider to the woman in question. While it may be true that the security you offer to the woman has an impact on the relationship, it doesn’t have to be the primary reason for the relationship to be based upon. Not all young women are gold diggers. You’ve just got to find the right one.

2. A fresh start for you: A young woman carries with herself the most promising aspect of feminine youth – It’s sheer freshness. She can go a long way in erasing memories of any of the failed relationships of the past.

3. She‘s more trusting of the world around her: Women of your age usually become wary of trusting other people because of the bad experiences that they go through. But a young woman doesn’t come with any experience baggage.

4. She’s more active: It goes without saying that a woman half your age would be more energetic than a woman of a similar age as yours. This energy is bound to rub off on you when you’re with her, thereby stimulating your life too.

5. You get a chance to relive your youth: Many men feel that they lost the best years of their lives in being responsible and dedicated towards their family. Dating a young woman can go a long way in reclaiming those lost years and making you feel much better about yourself.

6. A more intimate and romantic relationship: The beauty, both physical and mental, that a young woman possesses is bound to result in better romance and sex.

7. Improves your self confidence: Dating a younger woman can revitalize your belief in your own capabilities.

8. Less hassles: Younger women are more innocent and unselfish than their older counterparts. This ensures a nagging-free relationship and thus, more peace of mind for you.

9. Symbol of success: There is nothing more satisfying than walking arm-in-arm with a beautiful young woman. It conveys your success to the world.

10. Less demands: Younger women are more inclined towards having fun in life, rather than worrying about serious issues that the older women tend to focus on. This results in a more sustainable and stress-free relationship.

So the next time you feel bogged down by the society in pursuing your youthful love bird, go through the above points to reassure yourself that the positives comprehensively overshadow the negatives. And then take the plunge towards the life you’ve been dreaming of.
