Patkau Architects: Winnipeg Skating Shelters

Canadian studio patkau architects has designed a grouping of temporary shelters to provide ice-skaters with relief from the harsh winter winds.

A cluster of organic, cone-like structures, each accommodating only a few people at a time, gather in the center of the city where the red and assiniboine rivers converge. Standing with their backs to the wind, the units develop a series of protective environments and interior spaces that shield ice-skaters from the fierce winds and temperatures, which can feel like minus fifty degrees celsius at times.

Each shelter, made from two layers of thin, flexible plywood, is given strength and structure through its characteristic bends and timber frame. inside, a timber floor and plywood seating engulf the visitor and aim to convey a sense of warmth and comfort.

American Grindhouse is an informative look at the history of cinema. From the very beginning there was exploitation. You see the real nature of American’s fucked up fascination with the bizarre and taboo sexual cheap thrills. If you’re into vintage B-films, horror or the history of American movies…this is for you!

This is one of several of Key’s installations made using Chinese Takeout containers as material. Others have included recreations of Chinese restaurants entirely out of takeout foil. His works often play with ideas of what’s “normal” in mainstream British culture in comparison to that of a Chinese or Chinese British perspective and the stereotypes therein.

A cloud of smoke and ash is seen over the Grimsvoetn volcano in Iceland on May 21. The cloud rising up from Grimsvoetn as a result of the eruption reached an altitude of 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) in less than an hour, according to the Icellandic meterological institute.
