A Garden That Grew
The clean, crisp spring wind hit my face as I stepped out our back door that evening in early May. I could smell the rain coming and quickly slipped into my rubber boots. If we didn’t plant the garden tonight, it wouldn’t get done.
The thaw had come late this year, and then it started raining, making it impossible to get into our garden plot with the tiller. Now, we were desperate. It had started to become warm out and the planting time was almost past.
We had only tilled two rows in the garden so far, but that was
as good as it was going to get. I cringed thinking about how hard it would be to weed and maintain an untilled garden.
There was nothing to do for it, though, so untilled it would be. I bounced off the porch, five little siblings in tow. We all headed for the pole barn where Dad was waiting to give us each our task.
“Donny, get a spade. Dave, can you find a stake and some string?”
“What can I do Daddy?” Was the cry that came from the three youngest. “You all go get those flats of plants and bring them carefully over to the garden.”
A happy squeal erupted from little Mary, Roene, and Jo as they raced off to do their daddy’s bidding.

The last thing that can help a hunter predict what the deer will be doing during open shotgun season is finding where they go to feed. During the day, deer tend to bed down in an area with food or near food. This is so they can eat and then bed back down quickly to stay relatively hidden from potential predators. These food sources could be like in or near cornfields, bean fields, alfalfa, and oats. Watching for deer moving in or near potential food areas is a great place to sit while hunting. Deer at night are different when feeding to deer in the day. This is because they feel a little less vulnerable and are willing to travel a little farther for some food. This makes it difficult, without a trail camera, to figure out if they are walking on the paths made at night or during the day when they don’t move much. Many hunters don’t have the time in each day to try to figure out how the deer are moving and feeding during the year. That’s where modern technology comes in very nicely.
There is something called a trail camera that is effective at catching when deer are using a certain path. When the camera sensors detect motion, the camera flashes a bright light and takes a picture of the area in front of the camera. Many different animals can set this off, but most of the time a hunter can catch a deer or two in a picture. The time on each picture gives a hunter a relative time when the deer is walking on the path. Checking for how often that deer uses that path can help a hunter determine if a stand should be put on that path or not.
Deer are predictable at a small level on where they could be when hunting season comes around. Trail cameras make it much easier to catch when all the deer are moving so a hunter can hunt during those times. This gives the hunter the best chance at being successful that deer-hunting season.

Soooo.... am I the only one that's sick and tired of hearing about how Derrick Rose gets injured every game he plays in? Maybe that's an exaggeration, but not by much. This is the third time in the last five games Rose has played in that he's had to exit early because of an injury. Last night against the Raptors, Rose "tweaked" his hamsting in the final two minutes of the Bulls seven point win.That was only one day after Rose made some remarks that really bothered every sports fan in the United States (specifically Chicago) when he said, "I sit out some games now because I don't want to be sore at my son's graduation, or in meetings when my playing days are over."

Yeah, I said it.. and I really do mean it. Let me go ahead and say that it's unfortunate that injuries happen, but the way Rose has handled his injuries has been a complete mess. He holds the record for longest recovery for an ACL injury, sitting out the entire 2012-13 NBA season and not playing for 16 months total. Are you serious bro? RG3 tore is ACL in a January NFL playoff game and was back for the first game the next season. SMH.... Then everyone hypes up his return (Adidas especially) and he only plays ten games the next season before getting hurt yet again. The Bulls went from contenders with Rose to pretenders without them. Joakim Noah could only do so much for this team in Rose's absence, and that doesn't seem to bother the former league MVP. He made that extremely clear when he says he sits out games now so he isn't sore in the future!
Not only was I shocked to hear an athlete say that, but if I were the Bulls owner or Adidas I would be absolutely livid. They pay Rose the big bucks to go out there and PLAY, and Rose is kinda like, "Nah, I'm good." I bet you are good, Derrick. Sitting around and not playing is a lot more fun when you have 200 million dollars to mess around with. You're on your way to becoming the most disappointing MVP in the history of hoops.
I'm starting to wonder when his teammates are going to start getting frustrated. I'm sure they already are, but haven't said anything yet. The Bulls have a roster constructed that's plenty good enough to go on a championship run, but that won't happen if Rose isn't the engine to the well oiled machine. Before his first injury during his MVP season, the Bulls had the best record in all of basketball. Bulls fans thought they'd finally found their first savior since MJ was rocking the red and black. Now the entire city is in state of confusion (the Bears and Jay Cutler probs aren't helping either). They're growing tired of Rose's constant misfortunes and the fact that he's never in a hurry to get back on the court. Like I said before, injuries are uncontrollable, but D-Rose needs to realize that he has a small window to capitalize on his talent. When he actually plays, Rose plays extremely well! The Bulls need him on the court, not in the cold tub. Only time will tell, but it appears Rose maybe riding on a downhill slope into irrelevancy if he keeps this up.

Picking between sweet and salty is not the issue with this fun bite size snack. You can have the best of both worlds in one bite.
3) M&M Pretzel Treats
Ingredients:
1 bag of circle pretzels (9 ounces)
1 bag of Hershey kisses
12.6 oz. bag of regular M&M’s (Christmas colored if desired)
Little Hershey pies are a new creative mash up between a cream cheese wanton and a slice of pie. The intricate look of wantons mixed with the sweet taste of piecrust is the ultimate dessert combination!
4) Hershey Pies
Ingredients:
1 bag of Hershey kisses
1 refrigerated piecrust
Egg wash: 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water
Granulated sugar for dusting
Powder sugar for dusting
Start by thawing the piecrust and then rolling it out. Then lay a row of Hershey kisses around the outer edge of the piecrust about three inches apart. Cut circles three inches in diameter around each kiss. Keep making these circles throughout the piecrust until there is no more room. Gather up the left over pieces of your crust and kneed them into a ball. Then spread the crust out again. Keep spreading and cutting until all the dough is gone.
Then start folding the crust around each kiss in the shape of a wanton. Fold half of the dough over the kiss, push up the center of the sidepieces, and then pinch all of the seams together.
Coat each small pie with a small glazing of egg wash and then sprinkle the tops with granulated sugar. Whisking the mixture of an egg and one tablespoon of water makes the egg wash.
Bake the little Hershey pies in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for twenty to twenty-eight minutes or until light golden brown. Let cool for five minutes before moving to a cooling rack. Then dust each little Hershey pie with powder sugar ("Kiss Pies - Picky Palate").

Begin by spreading the pretzels out on a cookie sheet. Then proceed by placing one Hershey kiss in each pretzel.
Bake in the oven for approximately 3 minutes at 275 degrees Fahrenheit. This should soften the chocolate completely. Take it out of the oven and press one M&M onto each melted kiss and then put your treats in the refrigerator to keep them solid ("M&M Pretzel Treats").

Spruce up your regular peanut butter cookies this holiday with a kiss. Adding a Hershey’s kiss to your regular peanut butter cookie puts a completely new twist on the taste.
2) Peanut Butter Blossoms
Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup softened butter
1 cup peanut butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon salt
1 bag of Hershey’s kisses
Start by mixing the white sugar, brown sugar, and butter together and then add both of the eggs and the vanilla.
Tip: Again, let the butter soften on it’s own and use a double dose of vanilla if you are using vanilla extract.
In a different container, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix it in with the other ingredients. Once the mixture is consistent throughout, add the peanut butter.
Tip: If the consistency is loose, make sure to add in a little more flour.
Bake them at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 8 minutes or until the cookies are just about golden brown.
Tip: For this type of cookie, use a light colored baking sheet.
When you take the cookies out of the oven, the tops should be slightly impressionable. Press one chocolate kiss into each cookie.
Then put the cookies back in the oven for no more than 30 seconds. Take them out and let them cool before removing them from the pan. As they cool, the cookie and the chocolate will set and hold together nicely.
